So, what are your plans for August 1st?

Looking for inspiration here...

I was hoping to get to the mountains for the weekend, do some hiking and eat cheese-based food in honour of our host country. But the weather forecast isn't that good, and besides Trollefar has invited a colleague and his wife for dinner tonight ( this will be remembered and I will get revenge in due time).

Now hesitating between a "let's have a productive Saturday" plan with focus in ironing (not too hot = perfect ironing weather) and fixing a few things in the flat, or trying to plan for something interesting and festive despite the rainy forecast. With the Troll away, we din't need to worry about child-friendliness for once.

Our Swiss network is limited, and almost everyone we know is away on vacation. Besides I'm not looking for a social gathering, I just being curious as to what other foreigners do on the Swiss National Day. In our case, last year we were in Zermatt with friends and had a great time despite shaky weather. The two previous years I wasn't in CH at the time.

P.S. To the Mods and legends of this forum: still nothing to sell, if you find this post insignificant, no need to groan, just kill it.

Re: So, what are your plans for August 1st?

I will spend 1 August as I usually do, trying to better the epileptic mutt's chances of avoiding a fireworks-induced seizure.

It's not as bad as it sounds though. The best place to hide is the wine cellar.

If the weather cooperates, if the random left-over fireworks aren't too bad, we'll go for a hike on Sunday, likely somewhere local.

IMO the best way to celebrate 1 August - or the day after - is on the top of a mountain.

This year, we sent Lily to the Tierheim, in a fairly secluded place and I'm in the UK. Usually Lily and I hang out in the cellar.

BBQ with friends and associated families. Probably will let off some overpriced firework at some stage when everyone has drunk an irresponsible amount of beer. Pretty standard August 1st.

Re: So, what are your plans for August 1st?

I'm going to watch the fireworks!!

Sorry doggy lovers, but since i was a kid those things just mesmerise me!!

I have held a quivering dog when her daddy went to see the fireworks, the first time i had missed them in years.

So, i do know how it feels. I had to placate her with cat biscuits and cuddles. The cats just slept.

I just hope they won't be cancelled due to rain... Ah, well. There's always next weeks super ones!!

Local fireworks and festivities here tonight- and then big party with old friends (not really that old, just had them for a very long time... ) down in the Valley- huge BBQ and I'm making huge apricot crumbles and custard.

I'm hoping for better success shooting fruit off small people's heads this year. Was a complete bloody mess last year; I think I should have waited for my laser pointer to come back from repair.

Re: So, what are your plans for August 1st?

Fireworks are banned here due in part to the dry ground. On Saturday we will all give thanks to the rain God. He has prevented every little boy here, letting of a firework banger every minute for the past 5 days. We are enjoying the peace!

Re: So, what are your plans for August 1st?

Laze by the pool, grill some cervelas and bratwurst, smoke some cigars, watch the fireworks, and wash it all down with some good wine.

Then, the next day, head to Italy for my wife's great-uncle's 100th (actually, it was Tuesday, which we were also present for, but most of the town should be showing up for this one).

Re: So, what are your plans for August 1st?

It's our first "1st of August" here in CH, so we'll celebrate locally - go and eat some bratwurst, down some bier, and let the kids enjoy a pony ride or two at the local Waldshutte. Maybe in the evening, hike to a good hill, to see the fireworks.

But if I were you, Trollemor, I'd party hard - life ohne Trolls is for partying
