Hey lulumink,
You should not take all this seriously. I live in Winterthur with my family since 9 years.
We can tell story after story, and we are not black. One of my friends is black, and he was in a McDonalds, buying hamburgers, when somebody approached him with a complaint about unclean toilets.

My best trick to cope with all of this: I view myself as part of a humor slapstick movie, and I imagine millions of viewers rolling on the floor laughing. You can't stop laughing when you go through Switzerland wth this perspective.

Winterthur is usually a friendly town, expect more trouble in other swiss german cities.
But: my wife told me about Lausanne (french part of CH) where people on the street are much friendlier than over here.

It has nothing to do with color of skin I believe. What is stressful is the rising debate about boat refugees from Africa. Switzerland will be overrun, they know it and cannot do anything.

Let me greet you with John Farnhams Song You're the Voice:

We are not gonna sit in silence, we are not gonna live with fear :-)
Hey, thanks for your lovely stories and advice.
The thing is I was away from CH for 5 years and just got back.
I think things changed. Sure, it did!
I just got the feeling that people are less tolerant. I lived most of my life in
Switzerland. But this crap never happened to me before in such short interval. It makes me believe that people are crazy in this town. But I still have hopes

Can't tell if you're projecting, have a negative outlook or just had bad luck since coming here, but it's best to brush it off and move on. Some Swiss people indeed display racist behavior, while others are accepting. You can either address the issue when it takes place, or let it go and live your life. Surround yourself with inclusive and kind people
Very true! I just come here and share the story with you guys.
We all can have a good laugh and forget about it. Pretty good medicine huh?
It's not only Swiss, it's all the people living here tend to go nuts sometimes.

I've never felt the same way in the US like I felt in here. Small country and close-minded people that's all I guess. But I can live with that though.

Case 3:
I was waiting for a bus at the bus stop today. And the bus finally arrived and the bus driver clearly saw me and we even made eye contact. But he didn't stop for me. I was the only one standing there at the bus stop. How can you explain that? Ok, that dude was clearly from Eastern Europe. But so what?
i saw this on television, have you checked wether the regulations say that the bus driver must stops everytime, just if there are people, or just if there are people making a sign with the hand? For example in basel they always stop even with no people, in lugano they don't have to unless you have your hand out but usually do, in locarno if they see people they stop no need for hand signs. I mean new town new rules it's normal for bad stuff like this to happen, in some cities for example you can't hail taxies on the road and stuff.

Anyway coop restaurant is not a picnic area, it's normal that she asks since it's weird, like going to a restaurant with your food but yeah if you say it's from coop i guess she allowed to stay, no? so it's a positive thing, I don't know what kind of discrimination you read here.

Regarding the old man, there are plenty grudgy old men everywhere, in the US they shoot at you i guess. And yes you have precedence on the stripes but abusing it is typically swiss german attitude, they're likely to get run over when they come to ticino.

Well, with a little bit of thinking, you should know that I didn't do anything drastically wrong to cause this kind of problem. I am not a foreigner and I know the rules.

Try to wait at the bus stop and let the driver pass you without stopping. Very difficult.

Try to cross a small side street on the designated pedestrian zone and let a guy swear at you because you are crossing the street.

Try to bring something to Coop Restaurant and let the cashier tell to pay for it.

I think those are pretty hard to achieve. I bet you won't make even if you try hard.

What's the big deal? Happened to me, first time I jogged to the next stop, second time I went and bought an iced tea and then waited for the second bus.

Some twat swearing isn't going to stop me walking.
He might just have had a bad day, and perhaps you're in the mood to tell him "Ihne au en schöne Tag" next time - surely it'll take him by surprise.

Um - "Hani scho zahlt, do isch de Kassebon" - and show her the receipt. Easy peasy.

yea, get your popcorn ready, the show starts.

No, it's not. The reason I pointed out is because even foreigners discriminate others. Not only Swiss people and the white Swiss folks are usually very nice.
I'm apparently not white and she thinks that's okay to f*** with me. Trust me she knew what she was doing. Nobody is stupid.

Yeah. Right. Sure.

See, you are just trying to defend this senile. He was wrong, PERIOD, end of the story.

That is your opinion of my statement, nothing more.

Again, no one is stupid. For someone who lived here almost his entire life knows that this bus driver comes from Eastern European. Where else could he come from? Mars?

So? Just because I live here doesn't mean I know my train driver is from [insert random city in random canton]

Schedules to follow and just skip some customers? Screw that shit. Thats bunch of horseshit. I have never experienced that before in Switzerland.

There's a first time for everything. And ruin a schedule just for one customer? Seems quite the entitled thinking.

Single incident? Three weird stories happened within 3 weeks. This didn't happen to me when I was in Zurich and anywhere else in CH. So I don't know maybe I dressed and looked way too American.
If you want to use these three incidents to base your opinion of a group of people on, that is your thing, not mine.

In that case note the number on the bus, or note the time and bus station when this had happened and complain at Stadtbus Winterthur, they should be able to know who the driver is.
This will probably not have any consequences for now, but complaining should everyone and soon or later they have to improve their service.

Btw - I like Winterthur, but public transport in Winterthur is really annoying - just compared to other cities in Switzerland.

Did you signal as the bus approached the stop.oe only as it was level with you or after it had past? Sounds like level and after. I wouldn't have stopped either if that was the case.

I don't know the Winterthur setup, but in Bern not all buses (or trams) stop at every stop/station. Are you sure the bus that passed you was supposed to stop there? As stefbe says, note the number of the bus, the location and the time and then complain if they really were supposed to stop.

That bus stop only has one bus line. So everyone at the bus stop should be waiting for that bus line, logically. That bus driver must have known that I was waiting for that bus. I didn't have to wave. He should stop because I was there waiting for him.

Coop black lady is a cashier. She takes an order, quotes the price, receives the money and returns the difference.

Maybe she didn't pay enough attention to what she was doing (automatism). You described only 3 rather "light" incidents, you shouldn't dramatise.
Wait for the real stuff to come!
(just kidding, hope you'll find your ways again in Switzerland)
