What's up with the people in Switzerland?

Alright folks,

I just got back from the States three weeks ago.
And I have experienced some pretty f***ed up shit so far.

Ok, I had never lived in Winterthur and don't know shit about this city.

But within these three weeks, I feel like I was being mistreated and discriminated against.

Case 1:
I went to Coop restaurant near the train station the other day.
I bought some hot food from the COOP grocery store to the COOP restaurant.
A black lady working at the counter told me to pay for it. What the ?
Can't she see that the food is not from the COOP restaurant?

Case 2:
I was talking down the street and crossing one of the small street ON the yellow pedestrian stripe. An old Swiss guy was turning toward my way with his small motorbike and he didn't stop but passed me right around the corner when I was still crossing the street. That's OK, but he cussed "Schoofseckel" at me. (For those of you who don't know what that is, it's goat balls basically)

I mean what the hell? I was crossing the damn street and there wasn't any traffic lights. So the motorized vehicle has to stop for pedestrians!

Case 3:
I was waiting for a bus at the bus stop today. And the bus finally arrived and the bus driver clearly saw me and we even made eye contact. But he didn't stop for me. I was the only one standing there at the bus stop. How can you explain that? Ok, that dude was clearly from Eastern Europe. But so what?

I'm Swiss, but I'm not white. Switzerland used to be very friendly or at least in my memory.
I don't know what's up with today's situation. Too many refugees? too many foreigners?
Or Winterthur is just a f***ed up city to live in? What's going on here?

Just take a receipt for your food purchased before entering the Coop restaurant and show it to the person at the restaurant tills, problem solved.

Bus drivers have schedules to follow, they cannot always stop no matter how annoying that might seem. It has happened to the Swissest of Swiss Swiss.
As for "Eastern European": Did he show you his passport? Yeah, I thought not.

You're being too judgmental of people based on single incidents, perhaps mingling with more people might change your perception.

Winterthur has no particular reputation at present
Re: What's up with the people in Switzerland?

Hey lulumink,
You should not take all this seriously. I live in Winterthur with my family since 9 years.
We can tell story after story, and we are not black. One of my friends is black, and he was in a McDonalds, buying hamburgers, when somebody approached him with a complaint about unclean toilets.

My best trick to cope with all of this: I view myself as part of a humor slapstick movie, and I imagine millions of viewers rolling on the floor laughing. You can't stop laughing when you go through Switzerland wth this perspective.

Winterthur is usually a friendly town, expect more trouble in other swiss german cities.
But: my wife told me about Lausanne (french part of CH) where people on the street are much friendlier than over here.

It has nothing to do with color of skin I believe. What is stressful is the rising debate about boat refugees from Africa. Switzerland will be overrun, they know it and cannot do anything.

Let me greet you with John Farnhams Song You're the Voice:

We are not gonna sit in silence, we are not gonna live with fear :-)

Re: What's up with the people in Switzerland?

Can't tell if you're projecting, have a negative outlook or just had bad luck since coming here, but it's best to brush it off and move on. Some Swiss people indeed display racist behavior, while others are accepting. You can either address the issue when it takes place, or let it go and live your life. Surround yourself with inclusive and kind people

On my 15594th Ohmmm, but it's stlll not helping...
But did remember in my trance, that my problems here were more of an ex-pat nature - going now to my hypno-rebirth therapist.

Any recommendations for an English speaking one around CH?

Not sure about the rest of your post- but the Coop store and restaurant are 2 very different entities, and you are only supposed to consume in the restaurant food from their counter, not the shop.

I don't expect it's the not white bit which is the problem. You are Swiss so folk aren't on their very best behaviour when interacting with you. I'm not Swiss (well, not very) so of course the bus waits for me when I'm not even at the stop yet (and actually don't want to get on it!)

No, it's not. The reason I pointed out is because even foreigners discriminate others. Not only Swiss people and the white Swiss folks are usually very nice.
I'm apparently not white and she thinks that's okay to f*** with me. Trust me she knew what she was doing. Nobody is stupid.

No, I have never sworn at a stranger before. I am not an a***hole.
See, you are just trying to defend this senile. He was wrong, PERIOD, end of the story.

Again, no one is stupid. For someone who lived here almost his entire life knows that this bus driver comes from Eastern European. Where else could he come from? Mars?
Schedules to follow and just skip some customers? Screw that shit. Thats bunch of horseshit. I have never experienced that before in Switzerland.

Single incident? Three weird stories happened within 3 weeks. This didn't happen to me when I was in Zurich and anywhere else in CH. So I don't know maybe I dressed and looked way too American.
