I dunno about normal... I'm Canadian. I kinda had it drummed into me as a kid: Help her put her coat on, hold the door, up the stairs behind - down them ahead, always walk on the traffic side, offer your jacket, get out and open the passengers door and a host of other things anchored in my brain stem.

I will admit that while I was in my 20's I did form a negative impression when some misguided Feminist stated "I can put my own coat on", sure fire way to make a first also an only date. Too much WASP in me to actually say anything.
I'm Canadian too, same ethics. If they can put their own coat on, then they can take care of foreplay themselves too and I'll finish watching Saskatchewan lose another football game before I take care of horizontal business.

Re: Where did all the gentlemen go?

So, so tempting to start a thread... 'Where did all the ladies go ?'... then moan about the prevalence of selfish, shallow, ego centric women.

I'd like to think I'm still a Gent.. but if one more woman walks through a door in front of me and can't be arsed to make any attempt to hold it open for a second.. I'll resign my membership.

Well said.

Anyway, women who start lame threads like this on EF generally seem to be desperate spinsters who can't find a guy yet want something to blame it on that isn't themselves.

....Should we women in our late 20ies, early 30ies keep our hopes up? Where did all the gentlemen go or is there a new kinda gentlemen-like behaviour we don`t quite get yet? Fact is women want to be self supporting and independent, but we still kinda hope for men to take the initiative. Are REAL gentlemen extinct?
They are not extinct, but on a good way to go extinct. You only have yourselves to blame though, gentlemen are not really in demand these days. Most women, for reasons they can't explain themselves, run after "bad boys".

Treat them mean keep them keen, they say...

Re: Where did all the gentlemen go?

There's something faintly patronising about being described - or wanting to be described - as a "gentleman". Surely it is enough to practise decent, considerate behaviour towards everyone you encounter - male or female - rather than ostentatiously demonstrating "impeccable manners" to all the women you come across, like some kind of fossil with a trilby and umbrella.

In a nutshell: don't act like a dick. Isn't that enough?

Hell, no: You should also pay for everything. On top of that at the same time court her in the old fashioned way but be under no circumstance a sexist that treats her differently just because she is female...

To be honest, you should probably consider it a win if you can find a guy who doesn't spend most of his life playing video games

Re: Where did all the gentlemen go?

women like the OP need to look at themselves for once. what did you do to deserve the perfect man? why would he want to be with you? what do you add to the equation other than T&A? yes, disney movies told you you are a princess when you were a kid, but you dont believe in santa claus anymore either do you? assume that, to strangers, you are the same asshole as the rest of humankind, and then go from there.

if you want to skip that exercise because it hurts, at least operationalize "gentleman" because surely the distinction isnt just made on cliches like the door and the coat - they make my eyes bleed.

I think in order for their to be ample "gentlemen", there must necessarily be ample "ladies."
I don't see the connection, myself, except for genetics.

Of course, what makes either is a matter of opinion.
Too much food, usually -- although genetics does also play a role.

Re: Where did all the gentlemen go?

Whether you are a lady wondering about gentleman or a gentleman wondering about ladies, first take a look at what you call yourself.

I am not a gentleman, but rather a man who has some degree of manners towards other people.
Are you indeed a lady or simply a woman who wants to be treated as a lady?

It doesn't matter if you are male or female when it comes to expecting some degree of manners and consideration from the opposite sex, what matters is how you go about receiving those gestures of good manners.

Would you consider your husband a gentleman if he held a door open for a loosely dressed prostitute or would you kick his ar$# for doing so?

A proper gentleman doesn't make distinctions.

Although my Trilby is invisible, I prefer it. I will admit, I get a whiff of irrationality from some women. We are supposed to find you attractive, but not objectify you by appreciating your breasts, hips etc.

Joe Cocker's "You Can Leave Your Hat On"... I guess the post modern meaning is "Keep wearing the hat darling, I need something to focus on"

Re: Where did all the gentlemen go?

Difference between a gentleman and being polite.

A man enters by mistake in a bathroom and sees a lady in her birthday-suit. The polite man says: excuse me. A gentleman says: excuse me, sir!

Simples. The opposite of "gentleman" is "lady". If being a "gentleman" connotes a certain chivalry or deference to the opposite sex, then we can assume there is something in being a "lady" that prompts such special treatment (chivalry or deference). Or we can all just be decent men and women who treat each other respectfully (which is my preference).

But I agree. I don't feel like much of a lady when I've had too much food either.
