Being Switzerlanded - [ Veteran Style ]

To sympathise with our forum / Switzerland new comers I thought I'd create a thread that would show that getting Switzerlanded is not limited to n00bs but can happen to anyone even after years of living in this lovely country.

So I'll start it off with my experience this afternoon when I went for a quick break around Zug. I decided to nip into the Migros in Metalli and rather than just picking up a quick drink from the restaurant as you enter I decided to go downstairs and see what else they've got.

To my surprise my adopted drink of choice, a Rivella Blau (cos we don't want that much added sugar you know?) which I normally just pick up for CHF2.60 upstairs in the restaurant was CHF1.30 downstairs! And no the one downstairs was not the bottles bundled together it's the same refrigerated cold beverage! And there is no difference in price for the "mit-nehmen" option!

I guess I've been Switzerlanded! After being here for over 7 years!

Paying 1.30 CHF more for something does not qualify for the term. At all.

Ah but they factor in the charge for washing the glass you would drink it from & the staff in the restaurant. Of course you get cumulus points to balance it out.

Before someone else points it out - it's "veteran". Unless you mean a vet who ran, in which case it's: "vet ran".

I thought it's common knowledge that Coop and Migros restaurants have a lot higher prices than the grocery store themselves.

This isn't even close to the term, that's common sense you will find everywhere. Shops are more expensive than super markets in all countries.

Anything under 4 digits does not qualify.

Actually, 'Anything under 4 digits does not qualify' is pretty much the very definition of 'Switzerlanded'.

After just 3 years I'm not quite veteran .. But my funniest switzerlanding was in Nyon, by the chateaux .. Walking with the wife and we decided to stop and have a glass of fizzy wine.

"2 Glasses of proseco please waiter .. In fact the bottle please .. "

Along came the proseco shortly followed by the bill for 99.99 chf .. Bloody hell, lesson learned, ask the price next time! Oh how we laughed.

Re: Being Switzerlanded - [ Vetran Style ]

The markup certainly is significant. Following my proseco theme. In Quay23 resto in Nyon we ordered a bottle of it. Out it came, the very stuff we buy in the coop (way too) regularly for 6.99 .. Quay23 price was 35.-

Yeah I know somebody went to coop to buy it and brought it to the table and washed the glasses and paid the electricity bill and wages .. But such a markup in a pub!?

So what would be a fair price? You btw pay the premium not only for the guy who brought it to the table but as the name of the pub suggests for sitting in a premium location...

In Italy, Prosecco is EUR 2 a pop.

It is called Switzerlanded when one long-standing expat who knows his way around cons another fresh arrival newbee expat whereas the outcome of such action brings the former a profit equivalent to or more than 4-digit amount of chuffs.

Let me assure you, Quay23 is not a premium venue .. In my humble opinion 100% markup on a bottle of wine about is fair. Although unlikely in switzerland admittedly.

I was in London yesterday. A pint in a pretty average pub was something around 3.50 GBP. How much mark-up is that compared to the shop cost of a barrel of beer?

There are no doubt a lot of heavily overpriced places in Switzerland, but 35 CHF for a bottle of Prosecco in a lake side bar is clearly none of them. If you don't like the fact that bars a more expensive than supermarkets should you not blame it on Switzerland.

Re: Being Switzerlanded - [ Vetran Style ]

Perhaps twenty years ago there was quite a thing because up until then, the least expensive beverage usually beer (Stange). Restaurants and breweries reacted to public pressure (willingly I guess) and increased the price of beer. As a result, there's kind of a floor for the price of any alcoholic stuff.

The smallest serving for wine is 1dl with a floor of, say, 4.50 as per above. Multiply by seven for a full bottle and you get the low thirties as the minimum, perhaps 29.- including a small rebate.

I do not quite see a reason for excitement. CHF 1.30 in the shop and CHF 2.60 in the restaurant is quite normal

AND Auberge du Château in French speaking countries is a guarantee for VERY high prices
