If I want to sell a flat (in Zurich) can I just advertise privately and then get the notary involved at the end or must it be done through an agent?

You can sell your place privately and advertise it at any of the real estate websites (www.homegate.ch as an example). Simply make sure all the legalities are covered so there are no after-sale problems. The notary can help you with information.
