Samstig-Jass players

I occasionally play Samstig Jass, an on-line Swiss card game. It's quite fun if you know the rules and in order to chat, all you need to know is:

sz: sal zma or hz: hoi zma
gj: gut jass
dk: danke
glfs: gleichfalls

Unfortunately, the game also lures men who enjoy flirting and as soon as they find out their partner is female, they begin their chat up game. To top it off, they're usually watching Bauer Ledig Sucht at the same time. There's no way for them to find out who's behind the name but it can spoil a good game of jass.

It's Friday night in Switzerland.

The rules of Jass might also be good to know.

First things first: if you're playing on a Friday night, it's called Samstig-Jass, whereas if you're playing on a Saturday night, it's called Sunntig-Jass, and so on.

All the clues are in the OP.

Then don't give away that you are a female, or flirt back and tell them you are a man.

Which site is it?

Re: Samstig-Jass players

I thought Samstig-Jass had been downgraded to Donnstig-Jass.

I used to love playing Jass with the elder officianados of my wife's family.
I used to deliberately hold my big trumps back, just to wind everyone up .... it's just too predictable and involves no bluffing skills, otherwise.

Re: Samstig-Jass players

The rules of Jass:
http://www.pagat.com/jass/swjass.html

The website:
http://www.srf.ch/sendungen/samschtig-jass (Mehrspieler-Version)

My name includes an "in" at the end so it's obvious I'm female. I'm not going to bother changing it.

Great posts, folks

Re: Samstig-Jass players

Maybe I will start dabbling again in the sport of card playing. I'm more of a scrabble person. I also like chess even though I am low on the food chain skill-wise.

Ah, you see, that's folk etymology for you. Jass was reintroduced to Switzerland in the early 1960s by Donald "Don" Rhyner and Stephen "Stig" Elmer, both of New Glarus, Wisconsin. Their popular television programme was original called "Samstag-Jass mit Don und Stig", but their fans always shortened it to "Donn Schtig Jass". When the programme was moved to its current Thursday evening slot in the late eighties, the name was officially changed to "Donnschtig Jass" and has remained such ever since.

Don and Stig still do Jass masterclasses at their mansion high in the Engadin. You should sign up for one sometime.

There is an old thread about Jass that I managed to excavate. Similar discussion, links and stuff: Jass rules in English?
