Re: Moving to Basel when single: good idea or suicide?

I came to Basel by accident in my late 20's 7 years ago. Loved it, still do. When you need more nightlife action Zurich is 1h train away (50min car)... For me good combination.

Re: Moving to Basel when single: good idea or suicide?

there are bars/clubs that cater to people 25-35 with money even in smaller urban areas in switzerland, i guess the problem is that you won't go there with your coworkers if they're really how you described them and they won't be much into aperos either i guess.
in that case from what i heard said london is better (duh)

Basel's got a lot going for it .. but unless you speak excellent German your dating options are going to be limited to local expats. They're also likely to be working in a 'good' job for one of the local multinationals... and that means they're also very likely to be 'mobile'. Those numbers above are pretty funny... but you also have to factor in (IMHO) 80% of the younger, professional expats are liable to leave within 5 years.
Not true at all.. I have met many locals that were open for dating and my German was non existant

problem with going to zurich is that you have to stay there or come back quite early.

i was shocked when i saw the train availability. even schaffhausen has better night connectivity than basel!

if you go out in zh, you have to get the first train back or the last train is at 00.08. Unless it is Friday, in which case the last train is at 1.08. technically there are later trains on friday or saturday, but unless you want to get on at 2am and arrive at 5.26am travelling for 3:26 hours and changing twice and waiting in the cold in Olten for an hour at 4am, then they're not really worth it. friday/saturday, you can try to stay out late and get the first train back at 5.08 (beware that most days in zh have few decent parties that go on until that late).

when i lived in schaffi, i was going out in zh maybe 3-4 times a week. i wouldn't do that from basel.

If you're looking to meet someone then do yourself a favour and move to London or NY and forget about Basel.

Or maybe come here for a year, realise you made a mistake and then move on.

Let's look at the numbers: population of London: some 8+ million.

Population of Basel-Stadt: <200k.

Of those 200k, if you're not bisexual, then you're down to about 100k. Of that, let's say 40k are in your age range.

From those, say, 20k are not in a relationship.

Of those, 6k who are not freaks.

Of those you'd maybe like to go out with: 1,000.

Of those you can actually communicate with: 700

Of those who'd like to go out with you: 350

Of those you'd get to meet due to either one of you being workaholics: 35

Conclusion: buy a lottery ticket instead.

Oh man, I so wish I'd read this thread BEFORE I'd moved to Switzerland. And I'm in an even worse position..... I've moved to ZUG where my dating prospects seem to be software engineers in their late 20s who all think 'I'm going to teach them something' or men in their late 50s who think it's ok to pretend to be in their earl 40s. Help!

Not necessarily. My sister eventually found her prince. Mind you, she did kiss a staggering number of toads. Even my father noticed.

I'm in my early 30's and find Basel-Stadt vibrant and fun. There are loads of interesting and attractive people here, in my opinion.

Well, if it's hunting you're after, try the Schützenhaus. There is also the trafficjam on the highway.

Sarcasm aside, the Swiss love clubs. Find one along the lines of your own interests.

Tennis, sailing, walking, choir?

Re: Moving to Basel when single: good idea or suicide?

Ha ha ha this made me laugh out loud.
A male colleague once explained to me the secret rule that men use to work out the age of the person they should be dating. Apparently it is half their age plus 7 years and that gives the target age range. I was horrified to work the calculation back the other way..... there is a 76 year old out there somewhere who is trying to date me.... eeeeeek

Half plus seven. It's the law in all civilised countries.

One? There are probably more than one in Basel Stadt alone, more if you include Basel Land.
