Rainbow in a cloud?

I need to upload the photos still but I have never seen this before. On either side I had a bit of a rainbow spot and then an actual half a rainbow in another cloud, sunny day, never heard of this, anyone have any idea if this is just normal??!

Re: Rainbow in a cloud?

Look up 'sun dog'. There are a number of related meteorological phenomena which may explain what you saw, but that's probably a good starting point.

Ah ok that explains the ones on the left and right (couldn't get a shot of both at once sadly) but the one above arched the other way, which seemed odd! I'm there laying on the bench to snap a shot and everyone else that I was nuts (shhh maybe I am)

Hi BLP,
It was visible (rainbow effect each side of sun but not above) just south of Fribourg around 17:30 today, unusual & striking!

Re: Rainbow in a cloud?

Once, looking out of an aeroplane window I saw the shadow of the 'plane on the clouds below surrounded by a thick halo of rainbow colours moving along with the shadow. Quite fascinating.

Re: Rainbow in a cloud?

Is your photo upside down? The tree on the side looks "not correct" - the taper of the branches are upside down.
