They're great, but you might still need a proper alarm as a back up (I always did).

A more effective alternative is children - but you have to place your order a few months in advance.

Just put the alarm far enough away that you have to get up to stop it.

We have a Philips Wake-Up Light. The light comes on gradually and then a chirpy bird song wakes us up.

The light can be set to fade gradually too for nighttime.

I've trained my dogs not to wake me up in the morning, maybe that was a mistake.

Re: 6am.. alarm woes

I use 3 alarm clocks that ring about 5-10 mins after one another and place them in hard to get places around the room. There is also an alarm clock / coffee brewer that wakes you up with a freshly brewed cup of coffee..maybe worth considering if you are a coffee person

i tried an alternative, set my mac to come on at 6, it gives a boing and then the screen light comes on. i just found it annoying pushed a pillow in front of the screen and went back to sleep.

Doesn't make a big difference in Summer, but definitely in the darker months.

LOL that sounds absolutely horrible.

I too have one of those Philips wake up lights. A gradual warm glow that increases and then a friendly flute who wakes me up. Sometimes i wake naturally from the glow before the "alarm" and just lie there enjoying the light.

About the "going back to sleep"-problem: I find it very hard to do that since the light is quite bright at its fullest (can be adjusted). You can snooze the alarm but the light stays on so you don't really go back into deep-sleep.

Its not a gimmick by any sense, its the best way to wake up when its pitch black outside. Also very relaxing to have it dim slowly when going to sleep.

Added bonus: The lamp can also be set for fixed dimmed warm light for a nice mood lighting when you and your partner are in that special mood

I am not sure if mine would have actually woken me up by itself (maybe back when I was super well-rested) but it made waking up with a normal alarm much more "gentle" - no jolt of panic when the beeping started.

To be honest that sounds like the opposite of what you need though

Unfortunately mine died after about 3 years and I haven't gotten around to troubleshooting/repairing/replacing it yet. In the meantime Mr. MathNut uses the alarm on his phone and I wake up when I hear him creaking across the floor.

If you want to investigate whether having lights come on automatically will help you wake up / stay awake, a cheap way to do so is to get a bedside lamp and put it on a mechanical timer (you can buy these for 5-10 francs at Jumbo, Hornbach, etc.) Set it to be on from 6:00-7:00am and no other time. Then you're not constantly messing with it, turning it off manually, using it to read in bed etc. - use whatever lamp you already have for all that stuff, this one is the wake-up light. It won't have a gradual dimmer, bird songs etc. but you can find out whether having a light on is something that might aid your wakeup or not.

Re: 6am.. alarm woes

I have a wake up light. However it doesn't succeed in getting me out of bed - I found the birds / flute too relaxing and just slept through it.

I now have the wake up light plus radio timed to come on at 6:30. Then I have my mobile phone alarm with with a mewowing cat at 7 am (I love cats). Finally I have my mobile phone alarm with a really annoying tune at 7:30 (all this time the radio is still playing).

If I have to get up that will get me out of bed. If I don't, I may lie there for another half an hour. The dawn lamp switches itself off after 2 hours and that wakes me up if nothing else does!

For really urgent getting up needs, I ask the staff here in the foyer to come and bang on my door until I open it, but I realise that's not a solution most people can access!

easiest way is just to get up and get out of bed when the alarm goes off instead of staying in bed.

How early is early? perhaps it could be that your sleep pattern means you are in such a deep sleep mode when the alarm goes off, that it's akin to being comatose, therefore going back to sleep straight away.

Maybe try going to bed/sleep an hour or so later? Sometimes too much sleep leads to a less refreshing/difficult waking-up.

Or set your alarm half an hour earlier and have it on regular repeats to stop you getting back into that really deep slumber.

It's really hard trying to trick yourself with all the different little ruses to get out of bed, cos, you know.

One other thing to try, is using the wake up call service on your phone if the provider has this service and of course having the phone well out of reach.

Do you really have to be up at that hour? I wonder if you have the possibility to change your working hours, if that's what the reason is.

It's frustrating and awful starting the day with that stress, so I hope you find a solution for yourself soon.

Yep - that's exactly what I do. No fussing, no "just another 5 minutes", just get up.

Exactly! Most of Switzerland is already at work by then. Get up earlier, you slacker.
