Shopping until 20:00 In All CH?

Discussions about extending shopping hours in Switzerland are on the table (again):
http://www.20min.ch/schweiz/news/sto...-sein-12069782

I would be glad to see shopping hours extended, some stores close too early, and are over-crowded on Saturdays.

The top reader comments seem to be against the idea, and say (paraphrasing) "Think about the workers who have to work longer hours!".

One comment: "Wie sollen wir uns noch unsere Freizeit gestalten wenn wir jeden Tag von 6:00 - 20:00 arbeiten sollen?" (How should we have any free time when we have to work from 6am to 8pm every day?)

I don't quite understand that. When I was younger and worked in retail stores (not in CH), the stores were open 08:00-22:00 daily, and the workers arranged what shifts they could work. Nobody worked 14 hour days (I think over 8 hours per day was either illegal, or required double salary) Does it not work like that here in Switzerland?

Their point appears to be that some poor soul will have to do the Evening shift and that would be tough bc people aren t generally used to working those hours.. I get it but I can also imagine some retail workers who are night owls like me would actually prefer to work later.

Re: Shopping until 20:00 In All CH?

Personally i would prefer it if the shops opened earlier. There was the time when jelmoli and all the rest opened at 8.am, this had the advantage of freeing the rest of the day for other things. There are plenty of garage forecourts open all the time - why we should need people to be away from their families beats me.

Of course would nobody work 14 hour shifts.

The people who complain the loudest about the end of our civilization if the shop is open till 8 are probably the same who go across the border to shop at Kaufland Konstanz till 22.00...

Maybe they should open until 10pm instead? Even 8pm seems quite early.

With the automatic checkout machines, you don't even need loads of cashiers working late.

Actually, since shops in Basel were allowed to open until 8, the city's residents have become 17% better looking and 12.8% smilier. Oddly enough, the effect is for both shop-workers and normal people.

You can't argue with facts.

In St Gallen they found that with longer opening hours suicide rates increased by 9%, teenage pregnancy by 24% and obseity by 16%.

Facts don't lie.

Re: Shopping until 20:00 In All CH?

Shopping hours are wonderful now.
When I was first here the shops (including supermarkets) closed for lunch and at 5pm, it was only possible to shop during office hours so you could only buy small amounts - if you were allowed out!

Re: Shopping until 20:00 In All CH?

Simple solution: open at 12, close at 8!

Or, do like Italians and close three hours over lunch.

If pregnancy increased 24%, then how much work was actually going on in these extra hours?
...and so then only 51% of people were actually working longer hours, the rest were eating, screwing and killing themselves....

I got an even simpler solution: a business owner knows best when people want to come to him. It's not like employees are slaves in CH either, so if a shop owner wants some late night staff will he probably have to pay for it. Having shops in the suburbs open at the time everyone is at work is a waste as much as closing it when people want to shop. The worst is that at the moment every canton has some different rules so the same supermarket chain has completely different times depending on which exact suburb of Zurich it is located at. Aargau for example seems the most liberal where the Coop is open longer than in ZH.

Re: Shopping until 20:00 In All CH?

Wow, when I said that to a friend, that I thought some stores should be opened more hours, she gave me this responso...but I think that there are a lot of people that would be happy to work or more or in shifts as you said.
I also don't understand...actually would make more jobs available!
Just a though...
In Brazil people work also , as you said from 8 till 22h.
They work in shifts!

Re: Shopping until 20:00 In All CH?

would be about time, and shop owners can still do what they want.
I was really surprised when i found a coop in basel that was closed over lunch, like 11.30-13.30, and it was one in the area of FMI, ETHZ, etc. thousands of people staying over lunch in the area, it felt so out of place.
Anyway those who say stuff about 14 hours shifts simply have a flat-lined electroencephalogram, there's no other explanation. By the way I would agree if a store OWNER wanted to work 14 hours a day because he lives in the shop or watches TV there.

If it's not broke, don't try to fix it. This is what makes Switzerland Switzerland, so let us not try to make Switzerland into UK or USA.
