It's hard to believe that in 2015 and in a civilized country people still have to go without a staple of life- a washer & dryer. It cannot be that hard to bring this up to 21st century standards.
This sharing laundry is stressful and unsanitary.

Sure no big problem, you go buy one. Some rental contracts forbid them but in reality it is very difficult to enforce

Exactly! And it is the same with keeping animals.

yes, but he yells at everyone--for the dumbest things. My roomie told he came pounding on her door for leaving the laundry in thr dryer. He shouldn't be making tenants feel uncomfortable like this. It's not very welcoming.
How old are you? Where do you come from?

Exactly, that one is almost impossible to enforce as many people know, hence them not paying it.

You pay that much and don't have your own washer/dryer?

Why?
He lives in the French speaking zones. Washing is a biannual event there.

it is very simple- they can just tell you it is not allowed- all it needs is a complaint from an owner who has bought one of those flats because they don't like or are allergic to, dogs or cats- BECAUSE they are not allowed. Exactly what happened to our daughter who went to live in OUR flat in the UK. The Head of the Owners association came and knocked on the door- and showed her the ownership contract which clearly says dogs are NOT allowed- and we had no choice but to adopt the little dog and bring him back to Switzerland with us. My brother owns a beautiful flat above Vevey in a PPE- and they are not allowed a dog either- which they of course knew when they signed for the ownership contract- so being an owner does not mean you can do what you want. Unless you have a single family home, hopefully with enough land to keep away from neighbours.

They would have otherwise put in an official complaint and forced us to sell the flat, as we were in clear breach of the contract we had signed on purchase. Why do you think that you are exempt from clear rules on contracts you have signed or approved?
I think they were bluffing, legal costs would be high & likely to be an unenforceable term.

I can't say anything about forcing people to sell flats (sounds contrived) but it's 100% possible to restrict ownership of many pets in standard rentral contracts. It is not possible to restrict small or quiet pets like a hamster, goldfish etc. but dogs, parrots etc. - sure. Cats are a grey area.

And your landlord can certainly terminate the contract if you keep a parrot in the flat without approval.

Actually they can never force you to sell, the 'landlord' can in theory get the lease cancelled so the property reverts to him. It will only happen if ground rents / service charges remain unpaid.

Cats are classed wild animals in the UK, the cat can actually chooses where to live! If you stop feeding one very quickly they will find a neighbour that will in the UK.

I had a very fat cat who got fed by everyone as he would stand by their fridges & cry!

Re: Can I sue??? [another laundry rant]

Switzerland repeatedly has the highest standard of living in Surveys, the people who write those survey have never lived in CH. They can't imagine that in a well off society people only get a wash day maybe every 2 weeks.

In Germany everyone has their own washing machines in a room in the basement, works much better than the 'Swiss way'.

Pretty much everyone I know in France even if they live in tiny studio apartments have a washing machine in the bathroom.

I can do the laundry any day, almost any time, here in Switzerland, with shared infrastructure. Why? Good relations with neighbours, independent of the written rules (which also exist).

In Germany - well, no, not everyone has their own washing machine.

Indeed, we are all agreed that although we are not allowed to wash on a Sunday, you can book the rooms. Also, if emergancies occur (wetting the bed etc) that leeway is given about the 9pm shut off or sharing a slot.
Of course we have a sign-up system rather than an imposed one, and we don't have a locked laundry/mashine.

His behaviour is certainly not ok, but why don't you ask your roommate to teach you a few useful sentences in German, to see how he will react if you explain the situation in his language?
