It's always nice to have a guest room/library/junk room.
An office, a child's bedroom (if one is one the way or if they plan to have children).

My guest room is in the basement. That's where all the visitors belong ...
Ours is in the unheated east wing.

Hints like that work wonders!

I googled that particular east wing and the SE revealed ...

Re: Can I survive in Lausanne with 100.000/year?

It's a great salary: so far I survived with half of it, and very comfortably (although I'm only renting a room, so far)

The only problem is that a 3.5 pièces apartment is around 2000 CHF. If your dossier is not very strong, you would not be able to rent anything pricier than 5000/3 ≅ 1666 CHF/month.
But a recommendation letter will easily help
And prices are lower if you rent outside Lausanne.

Re: Can I survive in Lausanne with 100.000/year?

Afaik, it's a third of your monthly (gross) salary- so OP has a chance at apartments of up to 2.7k per month.

As Erazor suggested, it shouldn't be difficult finding a 3.0-4.0 apartment in the suburbs. Lausanne is a relatively compact city.

@alexandros_k

Good that you are checking your figures before you arrive. You'll be fine.

In addition to the threads 3Wishes has listed for you, I think you might find Kayakdad’s thread Budget For Family of 4 in Basel useful. He is asking about a budget for 4 people, but I think it has become quite a good resource for newcomers, even when just 2 people, because so many people contributed and referred him to other information about income and budget, with many useful links, also to other EF threads.

If you decide to read your way through it all – and it is a lot – please don’t be discouraged by the emotional content of some of the posts, which sound like the writers are really upset, at least some of the time. Unfortunately forums have phases in which the discussions become difficult. Please just skip over those parts, and extract the main information you find useful for yourselves.

According to my calculations I will have 5000CHF net every month, but it looks really low amount to have a decent life. Am I wrong?
Would you please be so kind as to help me?

Taxes, dear sir.

Taxes all have funny names here like pillars and so on. Even insurance is a tax if you have to have it.

So before he can spend the 100k he loses about 40k for those expenses.

And if you know people, have grandchildren, got all your books before Kindle was thought of and are messy too, you need three extra rooms. And if you and your husband both have computers, plus laptops, plus video equipment for swimming videos, plus... then you really need four!

Afterthought - and if you have a Rolle and two bikes for winter training, then five would be useful.

Re: Can I survive in Lausanne with 100.000/year?

the state tax would be around 1 months wages or a little more-lets say 10000 in year.

Health insurance maybe 6000 in year.

And the AHV is anyhow his money when he retires so hardly to be calculated. Thats not an expense.

Health insurance Fr.6'000.-- per year. Is that just for the monthly premiums?

Understood.
Though that could be taken as an average, you can get basic coverage from as little as Fr.172.50 per month, Fr.2'070.-- per annum!
Costs (premiums) vary enormously from individual to individual.

The tax really depends on where you live. Lausanne (and all of the Romand cantons for that matter) has a much higher tax rate than Zurich or Zug.

It may be his money when he retires but he won't be receiving it now and he has to pay his contribution out if his salary so it needs to be taken as an expense when calculating how much he will have to live on each month at this time.

Not really as premiums are not based on age once I over 25, so the young subsidise the old.
