Can I survive in Lausanne with 100.000/year?

Dear all,

I would like to ask your help please.
Soon I am planning to move to Lausanne due to a job offer.
My annual salary is 100.000 CHF gross.
How easy is to survive there?
I am planning to move with my partner and to rent a 2 bedroom apartment.
According to my calculations I will have 5000CHF net every month, but it looks really low amount to have a decent life. Am I wrong?
Would you please be so kind as to help me?
Thank you very much.

That's an enormous salary. You'll be fine.

Your biggest problem is going to be finding that 2-bedroom apartment to rent. You'll be able to afford to live comfortably, but you may have to trample over a few people standing in line for apartments.

To be very blunt indeed, unless you are incredibly stupid, the answer is a resounding yes.

If OP falls under the "complete nerd" category, then, it isn't stupidity that makes them ask this question; It is rather that OP lives in that theoretical world of their own and has absolutely no idea how the real life works. I thought that was why you got a spouse, OP, unless spouse is the same.

Well calculate that if you were to earn less than Fr.23'000.-- approx. per person per year - you would qualify for state benefits to help you get by financially!
For two people, it would be a bit higher, around Fr.34'000.--.

You are going to be earning almost 3 times that amount to provide for the two of you, moreover you say your partner may even work and bring home even more money for the two of you to live off. So it looks like you will be quite comfortable!

Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Can I survive in Lausanne with 100.000/year?

Welcome to the Forum.

If you want info on cost of living, there's loads of info here. Here are some threads that I think cover the topic nicely, including links and examples of actual expenses. The first one is a bit old, but quite comprehensive and worth a look. The second is more recent:

Cost of living - help needed to get it right

Cost of living in Switzerland-with examples

There are more than 100 threads that talk about cost of living. Some might be relevant to you and others not, but do have a read through the more recent ones. There's a LOT of good advice in there, you just have to try the search function:

http://www.englishforum.ch/search2.php?q=cost+of+living

A lot of threads do talk about Zurich, but both Zurich and Lausanne have a shortage of housing so prices are at a premium and good flats at reasonable prices are snapped up quickly. Compare some of the numbers in these threads with your own budget and see if the move makes sense for you.

If you get really stretched financially; you could always get up at 4am and deliver newspapers for an extra CHF 1,000 per month.

Is that what they really get for delivering papers?! Do you perchance know how many hours they work?

Net will be around 7100/month.

But net doesn't include taxes or health insurance.

Why do you want separate rooms?

Sorry, no but this is what my accountant recommended when my year end numbers were shading to dark red
I never investigated further because I am not a morning person
