How do I rent a hall?

A group of people and I (all refugees), would like to form a small community to get together once a month and learn, teach, help each other to learn French, find apartments, jobs. When I was in Basel a similar group of people would help us learn stuff, inside a rented room in a church and we would meet occasionally.

And given I am a translator, also involved in helping others with their questions, paperwork, interviews via lyca/viber basically everyday, I thought it would be nice to gather everyone and do it a whole day. Everyone comes with their files, ask questions learn a bit of French and be on their way

but tbh, I don't know what it takes rent a place here, average cost per hour, or where to find one and if there are a prerequisites from legal point of view even though I know this country is very liberal, just not sure if it is something that has to be declared/registered.

Any suggestions would be nice

Re: How do I rent a hall?

Since you're essentially gonna do social work that's the people you want to talk to. Most often the Gemeinde will be able to provide a suitable room, typically at no cost, provided they think your work will be helpful.

Now, where to start will depend on your Gemeinde. Personally, I'd just call the general Gemeinde number, describe the situation to the receptionist and ask to be connected to whoever s/he thinks is best suited.

Or, if you're a church goer, ask the priest/preacher.

Requirements: none. Just make sure to leave the room clean and tidy.

Also have a look at your commune's website. You may well find a list like this:

http://www.misery-courtion.ch/index.php?id=25

which details who's responsible for what. The commune secretary would be able to tell you how to contact them.

In Zurich they have a number of community centres with bookable rooms. Maybe similar exists where you live - as someone else said, your local commune will be the place to start.

Re: How do I rent a hall?

Perhaps one of these could help. You may have to keep asking around, until you find a place. You could also ask for advice/tips at the Salvation Army (in French Armée du Salut), and at any advice bureau already offering help to refugees. I wish you well with your project!

Re: How do I rent a hall?

You could try contacting EVAM in Vaud ( établissement vaudois d'acceuil des migrants) and ask them about available halls for your activities. There are several hall used by voluntary organisations helping migrants in the area many of them in churches or community centres.
I know the Eglise Arc en Ciel is one of the places and the EERV another ( with a centre in Begnins) but I can't find the email I had with all the information at the moment.

Re: How do I rent a hall?

Hi Cupid,

I'm sure you can find a place in Lausanne or around.
From the top of my head there are a few places you could try.

No idea about the costs but I'm sure you can get help as these places are sponsored by the council (commune):

http://espace-dickens.ch/
http://www.cpo-ouchy.ch/
Look on google for 'maison de quartier lausanne' too

You could start a non profit organization to have free access to these, if you need informantions you can get them from http://www.benevolat-vaud.ch/ , they also have a list of places to rent and help people start their non profits orgs...

Finally, there are always bars/restaurants that are not busy during the afternoons who might be okay with welcoming your group providing that you buy a drink (if feasible of course).

Good luck and do not hesitate if you need more informations.

You're welcome. I read your other post too and was wondering what I could do to help. You said 'help is always needed' in Crissier. Can you describe what kind of help is required from volunteers ? Like what I could do basically.

Otherwise, would you like some help to get started with your project ?

Help is always wanted, however the administration at EVAM/SCIR do not have incentives (afaik) to enable good samaritans engage in helping refugees, so there is that. You could donate clothes, toys to Caritas, better than come to the camp and hand out to individuals if you value your hands . To some people though, there is no excuse they will just drive the camp directly bring snacks, or invitations to free courses, plays, religious events and hand out pamphlets by knocking on each door. We have some religious people who drive over and take people to prayers weekly ... All is possible, but it is not something you can do alone.

However, the overwhelming issues are to do with the language itself. Most people who come here do not even know how to create a CV, find work, look for a place to rent, basic french understanding which I am hoping to be able to provide help, and if you are interested ... feel free to PM me, and we'll exchange emails.

Ah, I meant when you are giving away the clothes/toys to a group of people, there is a big change a black friday like scenery may occur.
