Re: police presence

As I was coming off the autoroute last Sunday, the police had set up a road block on the slip road.

They gave me a cursory glance before waving me through. Shows how dull my face and my car are.

Car before and after mine were moved over to the side for something else.

I assumed they were just checking for vignettes..

Re: police presence

The local newspaper mentioned there will be an increase in police patrols due to the typical surge of break-ins at this time of year.

First and second week of February are when they look for people who have forgotten to attach theirs.

Why wouldn't be allowed?

I did it for a year as well.

Tom
Just never saw such a thing and would assume it not allowed, now WHY on earth would I be groaned at for saying that? Because I said I didn't know it was allowed?

FFS that is a daft reason to give a groan! (not that you did it Tom to be clear)

I can't get my head round that statement. How can you be more careful during a specific period if you're not even at home?

Were they telling the burglars to be more careful around 1700-1900?

Or maybe they meant to be more watchful for other properties/neighbours?
Yup! Sometimes these quick replies can be bit tough on the reader. Me bad.

So, what the Vaud police was saying is that the early evening time (after the fall time change) is the key "window of opportunity" for the burglars when it is almost dark/is dark and they can see that no one is home (no lights). They suggest to use a timer on a couple of lights inside the home with the idea that the burglars will not bother checking out the house if they see lights meaning someone might be home.

Obviously it would be great if you were looking out for the neighbours if you are at home.

Not sure it has anything to do with refugees.
I was stopped a whopping 19 times in February. In 3 different vehicles, pre dreads.

19 times in 28 days, that really was unfortunate.....

In your case big american-import SUV at 5 am, you might be carrying prostitutes without permit for all they know, US plates will make everything more confusing maybe they think they're fake.
Do you need a permit to carry prostitutes?

Timers are a bad idea. I had a friend 2 years ago that moved into a new apartment in Ritcherswil and worked from early am, straight thru to about 10 pm, from 5 to 7 days per week. She left timers, but the problem is, unless you change them every day the bad guys can see you are doing this as well.
They cleaned her out. In fact they hit everyone in her block the same day. People even saw them do it but they thought they were movers. They basically were probably casing the neighborhood the week or two before to time people's habits. And timers are definitely habitual.

We bought a couple of fancy timers on Amazon for about EUR10 each that vary the time of switching on & off by up to +/- 1 hour to avoid just this problem. So if you set it for 7pm, it might switch on at 6:43 one night, 7:21 the following night and 7:06 the night after that.

We have them in a couple of rooms, so the lights in the house are switched on at random, as if people are moving from room to room. It might not be perfect, but it is a little more "realistic" than a simple timer, where the whole house lights up on the dot of 7pm.

That will be a nightmare for the average swiss....if you set it for 7pm then it should be 7pm on the dot, every time.

Re: police presence

For three days in a row, in the most random places, I've seen road blocks.
Affoltern am Albis, Ruti, Shiltal.

Like HIAO said...my car and self were not the interested to require more than a wave through. However, I did see them stop STOP a white dude from luzern driving a Panda. The police insisted that he pull over...he certainly was not carrying refugees. SO who knows what the presence is all about. Maybe its been too long that people draw salaries without needing to do much? But who needs public safety when the public is already chronically safe?

Re: police presence

Was in Binningen on Thursday, noticed three policemen on the corner looking attentively across the street. I thought uh-oh, something going down, bank robbery, drug bust, diplomat driving through?

They stood there for a while staring across the street like something would happen any minute, then turned to each other, started talking, laughing, shoving each other around like they were talking football, what's going on?

Few minutes later a truck pulls up, flaps the side down, policemen take apart some metal placard stands and load them on the truck. Truck driver and policemen all give each other high fives and all leave with jovial waves.

I was impressed.

General trolling and disruption. Love it. As if there weren't half a dozen of the 'old guard' on this forum who do just exactly that.

What did the poster disrupt? Was it dodgyken's casual racism?
