police presence

Anyone notice they are out much more these days? I have been pulled over and car searched 2x this week at 5 am. Neither time was an Alcohol test requested.(I run a nightclub bar)
Not just hi show me the car docs but a legit search going through everything.
Once they made me follow them off the highway, second time (yesterday at the church square in my tiny village. )

Both time a very "pleasant" experience (chatted for a bit etc) but I have in the 5.5 years I lived here in total been pulled over 1x 4 years ago . Never have I seen a police car in the village and now they are all over the place..... .

I don't mind it just wondering if somethings up? (Illegal refugees maybe)

Re: police presence

I have never been pulled over but see them stop and searching often. Is it not normal?

I don't have my reg document in the car (I need to re-register it soon) so hopefully that isn't me they pull over

Not sure it has anything to do with refugees.
I was stopped a whopping 19 times in February. In 3 different vehicles, pre dreads. All times released without any trouble. Since, in Switzerland, getting dreads, which I thought would make me stopped more, I have been in fact stopped far less. Sometimes they cut the lanes down on roads, even the highway today, if they are looking for someone that has run from the police.
Also this time of year we are getting closer to random tyre tread inspection before the first snow. They have been moving more asylum seekers into the rural areas. This might be a motivation.
And even though there is a person on here that gives advice on border crossing without declaring, which is wrong, she will see anything north of Zurich to Basel alot of random police and customs stoppings.
Apparently there has been an increase of German traffic to Switzerland for stealing and returning home.
I can't tell you. But they do this as they are lax at the border but strict inside when there are no excuses if items or people aren't declared.

It's hunting season - they'll be looking for game on your back seat, dripping blood over the upholstery.
Or just the usual of buying loads of cheap meat in neighbouring countries and smuggling it in the dead of night.

They don't want anyone to get away without paying tax on their meat.

Re: police presence

They usually look for B&E tools and stolen goods, especially in foreign plated cars, break-ins have become very common especially in businesses, here in ticino they sleep in the woods or hide somewhere and raid at night, then go back to italy with the stash.
In your case big american-import SUV at 5 am, you might be carrying prostitutes without permit for all they know, US plates will make everything more confusing maybe they think they're fake.

Yesterday in Zurich I swear to god I saw something like 10 police cars running about all over town. It was insane, I started getting paranoid

I saw three or four on the 2-3 blocks on Muhlegasse.

Re: police presence

This month's email from the Vaud police was talking about the normal increase in B&E activity with the time change. It did mention to be more careful in the 17:00 - 19:00 time when lights are not on (to indicate a presence) and people are not yet at home.

The increase in early a.m. controls might just be a follow on to that idea.

I agree, I was out last night at 0130 in Zurich and I've not seen so many police on the road at that time for a long time. And believe me, I'm often going through Zurich in the middle of the night right now - weekends especially! And I never get stopped - no matter how much I drink /joke

Actually, I was following someone down the Gold Coast yesterday about 2200 and they were all over the road. It made speeding past them really dangerous!!

I can't get my head round that statement. How can you be more careful during a specific period if you're not even at home?

Were they telling the burglars to be more careful around 1700-1900?

Or maybe they meant to be more watchful for other properties/neighbours?

On the other hand Ive seen far fewer mobile speed traps recently, maybe they have some new ways of generating revenue or have a specific target
