I actually quite enjoy eating alone. I can concentrate on shovelling food into my mouth as quickly as possible without having the distraction of somebody else there that I have to talk to, or that one person who takes 30 minutes to read the menu and decide what to eat.
I actually like eating alone so that I can enjoy a long, slow, multi-course meal over a period of hours without being rushed!

Tom

In the even I had to sit in one place for such a long meal, then I would prefer to eat with someone else. And probably at home instead of at a restaurant.

Re: Dining alone

The only time i look twice at a lone diner is one that is eating a fondue out of a little one person fondue pot.

Fondue should be a shared experience.

Re: Dining alone

I've travelled so often for business im Ausland that eating alone doesn't phase me in the slightest. Give me an e-reader and a beer and i will gladly sit there lost in my own world while munching away happily.

If you are lonely when you're alone, you are in bad company - Jean-Paul Sartre.

Re: Dining alone

Eating alone, also means time to think of why you are eating alone
or perhaps get over issues you might have had as a child holding a disk not knowing what kids to sit with at the cafeteria or how you were being looked at and perceived .. maybe also time to think if you're you ready to spend time and share with someone else (thus not eat alone)...
just saying :-)

Re: Dining alone

I would encourage not overthinking it...just go eat alone in Zurich. It's fine.
Here is tonight (Monday) at Hiltl. While i was there, about 10 people ate alone. Picture shows 4, plus me taking the picture. Don't worry, my Cola Zero was not lonely in the glass.

Also, I always forget how cool Hiltl is. If you are a woman from a country where drunk men in bars get "aggressively friendly" towards women who are alone (like in the US), Switzerland is not usually that place. And places like Hiltl will feel very safe. Lots of female wait staff and bartenders, and lots of females there with female friends. Very non-threatening. My wife is sensitive to this kind of stuff, and she loves Hiltl when she joins my trips.

Re: Dining alone

I like eating alone. I also like eating with others.
I think I just like food.

I think I will go for a burger topped with foie gras tonight - alone - and sod the cholesterol!

Seriously, you'll be fine OP.
