where donate clothes

Anybody know where to donate winter clothes for refugees? Is there a box somewhere in the area of Zurich?

Re: where donate clothes

Usually you have multiple options.

One, texaid does collections multiple times a year. They send a plastic bag to every household. Place it on the sidewalk on the evening before the day given on the bag, it will be collected during that day.

Additionally, some (but not all I think) recycling collection spots have bins for all things textile. Deposit at a time and date of your choice.

I could be wrong on this one, but I think I've also seen textile collection points at (Coop?) supermarkets. You may have one near you.

In Basel at least, there are multiple groups on Facebook and other social media organising collections and deliveries to refugees stuck at border areas. I am sure there are similar groups in Zuirch too.

Re: where donate clothes

Stick them in the big bins at your local recycling point and they'll be sure to find their way to those that need them and help hasten the death of Africa's textile industry.

Re: where donate clothes

I prefer to donate mine to Caritas or the brocki than to put them in the bags and boxes. All those texaid collections are for profit and some percentage goes to some charities, and as shared above, a lot gets sold to developing countries. I haven't found a donation set up here that feels totally right but I'd rather give to Caritas and there be a chance that the clothes are sold and reused here first.

Re: where donate clothes

Oh sorry I totally missed that you're looking to donate to refugees. I don't think texaid is the way to go for that. You can look around at some of the local charity websites, some work with refugees and take clothes. Or maybe there is someone here who is organizing a collection to send to Germany or Austria or Hungary. I knit and I know there are groups in various countries collecting warm knitted goods and then delivering them to where there are a lot of refugees.

If you do find something, will you please share it here? Thanks!

Hi,

I recently got in touch with the Winterhilfe organisation, they were collecting clothes and driving directly to refugee camps.

I don't know if they are still collecting now, but you can message me if you want the phone number of the contact.
