Re: How should one pronounce 'Coop'?

The Swiss are very particular about pronunciation... I've had a few correct my pronunciation of my family name...

Been unsure about this for a while. How do the Swiss pronounce it?

Would it sound 'Kup' written the German way?

How about in English?
I say Co-op like in "cooperation" not coop like saying hoop because a coop is for birds!

Re: How should one pronounce 'Coop'?

The "o" on Coop is very similar to vowel in "sauce".

Re: How should one pronounce 'Coop'?

I've always pronounced it 'Cope', but it also depends if you want to sound a local from whatever Canton, as a German or American :P

It made me laugh last week on the bus when a non-Swiss lady got on and asked the driver whether the bus went anywhere near "Migros" with a very audible 's".
Actually, around here the 's' in Migros is pronounced, only visiting or resident Swiss-Germans will leave off the 's'.

Re: How should one pronounce 'Coop'?

In Lausanne, it's pronounced like "kuup". Like you were trying to say the first syllable of "whoop-zee-daisy", but with a "k".

I'm actually trying to think of a word that rhymes with it in English, but I can't.

Re: How should one pronounce 'Coop'?

I am German and pronounced it co-op. Swiss (from Zurich) corrected me using only one syllable "coop". As in "door"

Which is weird since so many words are pronounced differently from village to village.
