Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

For those looking for smaller markets, this website is the best. (For bigger ones too but they are usually easier to find on your own.)

http://www.brunnvalla.ch/christmasma...itzerland.html

Also, don't forget to check the SBB website - they have lots of special deals for many of the markets.

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

these markets lack variety and creativity. ok, bellevue seems to have some new foodstalls...wowzzzzzzzz... else its every year the same. tight n packed, full of boring foodstalls, awful tasting glühwein and these ethno goods stalls. i find thats the worst and i wonder how they make any money? everytime i walk past there is nobody buying these wooden carved mutant figures? all i can do is to stay away and wait for it to be over.

The deep fried apples are better at Basel Herbstmesse.

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

For me they go in the following order:

Colmar
Strasbourg
Rappi
Einseideln

Generally I have not been too excited with the Züri ones but this year I have to agree with some of the other posters the Bellevue one really is quite good, the food prices have come down a little in the last week and I have found a new brilliant burger for only 13.50chf.

If you have kids/students they offer about 30% off for students so bring the older kids along!!

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

My partner went to the local Christmas market on Saturday, she drank two glasses of Glühwein and came back saying it was a crap market.

Then on Sunday morning she took the dog for a walk and went back "sober" to listen to some live music at 11 am. She returned and said she had made a mistake, and in fact the little stands were very pretty and she couldn't understand why she hadn't seen them properly on Saturday!

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

As a recent immigrant to Switzerland, I'm missing spicy food and find I'm going to have to do a lot more home cooking. So, I've made a few visits to the Indian curry stall on the Zurich Christmas Market at Hauptbahnhof, and my other half has been scoffing the gyros on the Greek food stand.

Ironically, the Christmas Market in Manchester is reputed to be the largest in Europe! It's huge and covers several locations in the city centre.

I went to the market in Brussels last year (rubbish), been to London, Edinburgh, Brighton, etc in the U.K., but my all time favourite is Salzburg.

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

I've been going to the Christmas Market in Stans every year for the past three years. I enjoy the crafts, the atmosphere and the fact that it's located in a very quaint area in the middle of the old town. Highly recommended for a pleasant afternoon,.

However, it was last weekend so you'll have to wait another year on that too.

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

The Neuchatel one -now over, unfortunately- has more local crafts than I've seen in most of the markets I've been to.

And sure, the food at Bellevue is a little on the pricey side, but at least it's got some stalls you don't see other places.

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

Definitely recommend the Rapperswil market - nicer atmosphere than Zurich and not to far to get to either. If you can travel further - worth looking into options across the border in Germany too.
