Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

OK, what's your honest opinion of the Christmas market in Zurich?
It's pretty, but the part in the main station always struck me as being the same every year, same stands, same overpriced food and trinkets for sale, and the same profit-oriented stand purveyors who have as much Christmas cheer as the Grinch. I know it's expanded to the Sechselauteplatz in front of the opera house. We have basically avoided the whole thing now, things are so expensive and it's so crowded. Any recommendations for other Xmas markets within an hour of Zurich?

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

All Christmas markets are more or less the same every year. Chestnuts, glühwein, spices, candles, wooden toys, burnt almonds... it's called "tradition".

So in some sense, sure: if you've seen one you've seen 'em all and if you've seen this year's you've seen next year's.

But if that feeling of sameness-every-year actually bothers you, then Christmas celebrations of any sort are unlikely to appeal very much. I suggest you set your alarm for January and take a nice long nap.

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

Not true.. I have been to Christmas markets in France, Italy and even Germany that have more cheer. Where I don't get the feeling it's about maximizing profits.

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

Go for an overnight to Aosta, Italy. Their Christmas market is really unique. It's set up in and around the Roman ruins and the pictures you will be able to take are just spectacular. Also, their shops all along their pedestrian streets are varied and much, much different than the shops you will find in Switzerland.

Well worth the drive. Give it a try.

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

The Xmas market in the Zürich HB is pretty awful. I think part of the reason is the extortionate rent (and other conditions) that the stall holders have to pay. As DB say's, Rapperswil is very nice, much more crafty, local, individual etc.

But last Sunday I went to the Xmas market at Bellevue, in front of the Opera House. I don't know if this is new but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. We arrived at noon and it was pretty quiet (it got very crowded though by 3pm Sunday). There's an ice rink and a small "mountain" of ice and snow for kiddies to climb (and throw snow balls from to middle aged Yorkshire men drinking warm spiced wine).

It was roughly 50/50 food and gift stalls and the quality was much better than the HB. And the bonus for me was, I discovered white Glühwein for the first time!

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

Winterthur. Less crowded and less touristy. Albeit smaller than the two usual suspects in Zurich, you also pay less and it is rather cosy in the old town. Two minute walk from the main train station in Winterthur.

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

I don't mean to Bah Humbug on the Bellevue Weihnachtsmarkt, but Wagu beef brioche burgers the size of a walnut for 18.- is not exactly Christmassy in price or in what it is. There are loads of designer street food stalls there and then the usual bits and bobs that are way overpriced too. But its Zürich so thats exactly what we should expect

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

Yeah awful and overpriced. Paid 8 CHF only for food made of flour, sugar and whatnot. The crepe stall even sells the crepe with schoggi that actually contains chocolate stalden (the chocolate cream in a tin), not chocolate sprinkle, like what is sold in small market around singing christmas tree behind the Bahnhofstrasse (sorry, my main destination in the christmas market is always the crepe stall, apart from the glühwein ).

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

I've lived here for close to three years and I've visited nearly 30 different Christmas Markets (Switzerland, Germany, Austria) and the only thing I like about the market in the HB is the beautiful tree.

Why does it have to be within an hour?

Some of my favorites are Bremgarten (go next year - you missed it this year), Montreux, Basel and Rapperswil. St Ursanne is really cute - don't know the dates for this year.

To the OP - tell me what you are hoping to get out of a market and I can probably tell you which one to visit.

Now, personally, I'm off to Rapperswil for the afternoon. Tchuss!

Re: Zurich Christmas market: opinion?

We went to a lovely quaint market in the old part of Sargans (below the walls of the castle) a couple of years ago. The stallholders didn't seem - for the most part - to be the usual suspects, and there was a lovely atmosphere there.

I've no idea when it will be this year, though.
