Rent a car.

Avoriaz is a very large ski resort which can be accessed by bus and ski lift, then on foot. Morziine is the large village below Avoriaz, from here there is a cable car up to Avoriaz.

Once you are there you can on a fine day enjoy the sun, the mountain atmosphere and the beautiful views.

The town Avoriaz is quite modern, and is essentially concrete buildings disguised under wooden tiles. It is unique, as at most ski resorts near to Geneva the pedestrian cannot access the top of the mountain easily, and when up there, not much to do. Avoriaz has horse drawn sleighs and there used to be dog sledges too. There is an open air ice skating rink too, even a cinema showing French films!

Have you ever been there? I have been 7 times to the area & always disappointed by the snow. Locals always tell you haw good it was last week, last month or last season . The area is very low & gets a lot of sun, so hardly surprising it's not got that good snow. As I had a car, I always made day trips to Verbier or Chamonix where the snow was way better.

I know several people who live in Annecy & work in Geneva, they would love to be able to get to work by public transport in under 2 hours........ Service is very unreliable. They all drive to work.

Yeah I mean I gather you CAN go by train, but 2 hours? clearly it's not an easy trek via train for something that isn't a long car trip

Thank you all very much for the great advice. I think we are going to try Annecy this time around, but I'm definitely bookmarking the thread for future trip inspiration!

If you rent a car to go, then don't forget to go for a walk, and if budget permits, a meal at le Père Bise. There is another one behind, an old Convent, which is a tad cheaper, called L'abbaye de Talloire- very romantic- would love to spend a night or two there one day.

Now until now nobody has mentioned, or implied, skiing. Avoriaz is an excellent place for non skiers to enjoy a sunny visit to the mountains.

I used to take my skiing holiday in Austria, and always the 3rd week in February. But after moving here I looked around and for the week before Christmas we stayed in an apartment in Avoriaz. We had an excellent time, the snow was perfect. One child went down with chicken pox the day we arrived, and she was still able to enjoy herself by watching the ski slope from her bedroom. Later in the week she took a horse sleigh ride.

My point is that Avoriaz is an excellent resort for non-skiing people, even for a day trip. And if you do ski there are some very easy slopes and some terrifying down hill black pistes.
