What does one do with the 5¢ (coins)?

Hello,

I been here (Vaud) for more than two years and sometimes doing a purchase with cash I receive this little "golden"-ish coins and just notice that I have lots of them, never been of use to me since they are not accepted e.g. in the parking lots or in the train ticket machines, so what's up with that?

What does one do with the 5¢ coins here in Switzerland?

Just collect them... create things like this?

Cheers!

I sometimes throw them into the sandpit of a nearby playground when coming home at night. Maybe some kid will find them and become a famous treasure hunter later in life.

Re: What does one do with the 5¢ (coins)?

I'm the treasurer of the choir I sing in and we've just given a concert where we invited people to help cover the costs with a collection at the exit. I was astonished at the number of 5, 10 and 20 centimes pieces in the baskets. There were plenty of banknotes too, but some people just seem to tip the really small change out of their purses (there was even one 0.10 € coin!).

As someone else pointed out, spend them. Ultimately the only difference between them and any other coin, other than value, is machines won't take them - everywhere else will - and just as you'll get lumped with one whenever you buy something ending with 5 rappen, you'll get rid of them quickly enough the next time you buy something ending with 5 rappen.

Or you could get the cardboard tubes from the post office and spend a cold Sunday afternoon filling them up.

I collect them in a jar and then take them to the coin machine at the bank.

Unless they choke on it first. (Little kids have a tendency to put things instantly into their mouths).

I usually spend them as I get them when buying small things. Hubby puts his small coins into our son's piggy bank which the son then periodically takes to the coin machine at the bank and deposits them into his savings account.

Some banks have a machine where you can deposit coins. The amount goes into your account, the machine gives you a receipt.

Oops, just saw BM's post.

You can also donate them to UNICEF. They use the raised money to help the children in need around the globe.

You can get a free Spendenböxli from unicef.ch

I like to lay a row of them on the tram tracks and celebrate gleefully when they all get squashed. It's like those machines at the Empire State but free.

It's to push people to use credit cards, these .95 prices are typical of supermarkets. (not really)
Anyway I get them so rarely that i usually throw them on the floor or in the trash. If it makes you feel better give them to a charity but it will never make a difference.
