We are picking up a hire car from the Airport and driving to Zermatt
for a week and wondered what the best route is;

The hotel recommend taking the car train at Kandersteg.
The route maps recommend staying on the A12 and go around the mountains.

I don't know the best route to drive.

However, cars are not allowed in Zermatt so you will have to park your car in the last town before zermatt and take a train.

Sure, we are parking the car in Tasch when we arrive.

I have always taken the train from Geneva before
but there are no direct flights from Miami to Geneva
and felt like driving for a change as would like
to visit some other towns on the way back to Zurich
from the south.

Are you sure that the train wouldn't be better? From Zurich airport to Zermatt is between 4 hours 10 minutes and 4 hours 45 minutes, passing by some great scenery and without the hassles involved in driving. After all, you'll have to take the train for the last few kms anyway.

Kandersteg is the best route by far; I've done Zermatt a good few times. It's a long drive to Täsch - make sure you know when the last train up is...

yes or indeed you could walk if your energy levels are high and your luggage levels are low - depends which end of town you'll be staying in.
