Re: Laundry once a month?!

That's really unbelievable! I've heard of people only being able to wash once a week or fortnight, but once a month is just ridiculous! Guess it's time to start sending your laundry out...

Re: Laundry once a month?!

I cannot imagine how can one manage with only one day per month! Three days only and you already have a pile of dirty clothes, towels etc. Not to mention bed linens, blankets one should change every week.
I, for one, would try to find another apartment a.s.a.p.

Re: Laundry once a month?!

That's how it is for me. I get one day one month, and 2 days the next month. So I get to wash 3 days in 2 months. I wouldn't mind.... well I would... if the cycles were faster, if every load takes at least an hour and I am restricted from washing during the quiet times..... you do the maths.

I've also heard of other people having a once-per-month washing cycle. Also apartment blocks with one washing machine and NO tumble drier - for 6 apartments!
One machine and no tumble dryer for 8 apartments here, but we have a sign-up sheet.

Eta, today, this very day, they installed a dryer!

Re: Laundry once a month?!

It is so hard to find an apartment with a washing machine. Is there any search engine which allows you to check this as an option?

Re: Laundry once a month?!

I used to have my SO doing laundry every 2-3 days (before I moved to CH). So I never had to worry about having clean clothes.

Luckily, since moving to CH, I've never had to live in a situation here with strict rules, always first-come-first-served form and it works fairly well. Maybe once or twice a year, some one is using the machine at a dire time.

However I have moved on to only doing laundry once every 4-6 weeks, but now that I'm moving, I realize the only reason I can do this: I have waaaay too much clothes. Have to do a serious moving reduction.

Re: Laundry once a month?!

Just unbelievable, laundry once a month!! I would consider getting a mini portable washing machine. Such machines aren't that efficient and require a little labour but great for washing small stuff (socks, t-shirts, etc.). You can google (and even check YouTube) "portable washing machine".

This is so bizarre especially if you see what kind of rent people have to pay. Am I right that this is only a problem in Switzerland? I have never seen it elsewhere that you would rent a 2 bedroom flat but not have your own washing machine.

Is it related to the sensitivity (obsession?) with noise in Switzerland?

Re: Laundry once a month?!

In our building there is one lady who collects and does washing for everyone. So non stop washing day and night for the whole building. No conflict no timetable. Frau Fuchs is loved by everyone but she is on 120k a year. We pay 4k a year to Frau Fuchs.

Every building needs one Frau or Herr Fuchs

It is related to the fact that Switzerland is service oriented country, so making difficult to do something by yourself, you more likely buy a service for that. Business as usual.

That might be the 'window dressing' rationale given, but I would guess that the real reason is that this is such a tight market. A landlord has little incentive to invest; why do so when there will be cues lining up to rent the place out as is, inconvenient laundry schedule and all?

Tenants don't demand change, afraid of rocking the boat in the tight market.

And so it goes.

Re: Laundry once a month?!

Oh the luxury of washing being something that gets done while everything else is happening, so you don't even notice that you are doing washing. A load here, a load there, no mountain of dirty washing....... I have to devote a whole day to it.
