Why some Loud Yanks should live here

Funny article... the art of being quiet .. and the horror of those who are unnecessarily enthusiastic... awesome.

"...the average American commute time of 26 minutes..."

Really?! That's a pretty poor reason to complain - 26 minutes isn't a very long commute by any stretch of the imagination!

Re: Why some Loud Yanks should live here

I can relate. I was told by my boss back in the UK that I was too quiet and needed to put myself forward more.
My job was with the NHS, and mostly I worked in a one-to-one environment with patients. That suited me just fine.
I was always made to feel it was a bad thing to be introverted, and yes shy.
Pity I've never worked in Switzerland, I would have fitted in well, apart from being terrified every time I had to speak German to someone.
I think my perfect job was probably a hermit!
Btw, the author lived in Baden and wrote a book called "Swiss Life:30 Things I Wish I'd Known" .

"Loud enthusiasm had no place in Switzerland - unless you happened to be a church bell."

Re: Why some Loud Yanks should live here

Humorous but also cringe-worthy...no smiles, no enthusiasm? That would be my personal hell Thankfully it's one personal experience, and not the totality of work places in Switzerland.

Re: Why some Loud Yanks should live here

I'm an introvert and am being told all the time I need to become more extrovert *yawn* Too bad for them that I a) don't give a damn (I'm the "take-it-or-leave-it"-type) and b) can't change even if I wanted to. Can I stand in front of 100 people and present something? Yes. Do I thoroughly enjoy it? No. Am I shy? No. Do I have to speak out loud every freaking thought I have? Absolutely not.

If it were for me, I'd rather shut up than say something that has zero substance or just repeating what 15 people before me already said Of course as it seems to be expected, I sometimes (i.e. 1 out of 10 times) "happily" repeat what those 15 others just said, just for the sake of having said something, of course finding it utterly ridiculous

Sadly, I work in an environment that is as American as can be, so Switzerland doesn't do it for me in that department

I dare say lack of enthusiasm is hardly the problem here. It's a think-first-then-act mentality and clearly, American mentality is the other way around. Disclaimer: as usual, there are exceptions.
