Free things for international students

Hello,

I'm going to attend a master course in Switzerland this autumn. Due to my financial budget, I'm wondering what are free or nearly free things in Switzerland for an international student? I have learnt that a travel card to go by train after 7PM for free is usually chosen by international students. Is there anything else? I really want to explore Switzerland as much as possible.

Thank you very much!

Re: Free things for international students

Advice, good or bad, is usually free.

For most everything else I would expect, at best, a reduction in cost as opposed to freebies

You are talking about Switzerland, nothing is free... Oh! Wait, riiight, you can drink free water from the fountains, at least in Basel.

It is not for free, you need to buy a Halbtax beforehand to be able to use it, but It surely reduces costs if you travel in the evenings.

With your student card, you can usually get mild reductions for entries to the opera, theatre, museums and the symphony, reductions for computers and some more uni related stuff and food in the university mensas.

Cheers, marischi

What kind of (free) things do you have in mind? What will you need and won't be able to cover?

Sorry for not making clear what I meant. When I asked "free things", that was things that have special discounts for international students or things students don't need to pay for. I was thinking about public libraries, public transportation, so on. Staying in Europe I'd like to be able to travel as much as possible by train or bus and get tickets into some public events.

So perhaps I should have asked you what are special offers for international students in Switzerland?

Re: Free things for international students

STUcard gives reduced and free entry to many things. Sunrise have a useful subscription for under-30s - MTV Mobile. And you can always ask if a student discount is available.

Re: Free things for international students

At best you get some reduced prices on things, but nothing will be free. This is Switzerland after all There are no special offers for international students either, if anything, for students in general, but not for international ones specifically.

Some entry tickets to museums, the cinema etc. are cheaper for students. You are probably able to buy books at a discount. Some restaurants offer minor discounts for students. Even the odd store (clothing, computer) may offer discounts, but you need to find out which ones yourself. Cell phone subscriptions and credit cards are usually cheaper for students too. Gleis 7 is not free, but a very good deal if you take public transportation after 7pm a lot. Other than that, I can't think of anything that would be cheaper, let alone free for students.

Google "Studentenrabatte Schweiz" and the Stucard is a good tip indeed.

Re: Free things for international students

The Gleis-7 abo is indeed fantastic if you use the train regularly, not only for international students - highly recommended also for Swiss students .

This link might provide you with some other student saving tips.

Stand on any track during morning commute to get your free fill of cigarrette smoke. #LifeHacks

Great link, thanks! OP - the Stolze Openair should be good if you're around in Zürich this weekend and looking for something to do.
