| | | Garlic Price Increase
For those who did not notice, the price of one piece of garlic at Migros has gone up again. It is now CHF 1.50, up 7% from CHF 1.40 just weeks ago. Just last year, it was only CHF 1.20 (16% lesser).
Sometime back, Migros tried to sell by per kilogram and an average sized garlic costs only about CHF 0.60.
A few centimes here, a few centimes there, is this a global trend that must finally hit us all? What others have you seen that cause one to tighten the belt a bit more than usual?
Fyi, look out for milk price increase from July this year as already announced by Migros.

Rice and flour have also gone up 20 rappen per kilo in Migros. I wouldn't have noticed, but it is written on the packet and I still had a pack from before. Milk is always cheaper at Denner or Spar and unlike Migros you can grab some beers/champaine in the same shop.
Garlic here isn't at all tasty. Give me the French garlic any day!

The last time I visited one the selling price was also per piece (was at CHF 1.20). Where do you get yours and the price of each?
Any other good grocery deals to share |

Basic food prices are rising worldwide (on a much larger scale than your statistics) but I doubt a few rappen on a luxury food item for us (generally well off) folks is anything compared to millions who might starve over the next few years.
Think yourself lucky.

Try Aldi, it sells in pack (500g) CHF1.79 [I bought mid of last month] - there is around 6 in a pack. Nowadays stuff in Migros is getting more and more expensive, for example the Sirup Himbeer (my kids love it) from end of last year CHF3.80 to CHF4.20 in Feb and now CHF4.80, it just going up 'quietly'.

Think yourself lucky. | | | | | It is very true: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007%E2...d_price_crisis
However few rappen spent here and there add to the CHF... and few CHF spent decrease one's savings...
yeah, famine will become more serious problem. We should appreciate the fact that we are not affected by starvation... |

No one wants to farm mate.... The global farm population declines by about 1.5% a year. So today we have farmers who send their kids to college to become lawyers, doctors, electiricians etc etc... No one wants their children to farm because the wages of farmers have gone down so much in the last 100 years.
So we are at an inflection point where supply doesnt reach demand. It started a couple years ago with sugar and olives. Now its grains and dairy. Next will be veggies and meat.
in 1960 30 raps of every 1CHF you made went to feeding your-self. Today we spend about 7raps out of every 1CHF.... Thus farmers have been making dick-shet. Now that these 3rd world countries have improved job markets and better educations, no one wants their children to farm....
So until farmers incomes rise to attract more farm workers, prices will continue to rise.
Get used to it...... If you want cheap food, grow it in your own garden. | Quote: | | | | | For those who did not notice, the price of one piece of garlic at Migros has gone up again. It is now CHF 1.50, up 7% from CHF 1.40 just weeks ago. Just last year, it was only CHF 1.20 (16% lesser).

Get used to it...... If you want cheap food, grow it in your own garden. | | | | | Actually, many Swiss do grow their own veggies in the garden, at least they do it where I live outside the city. My folks on the block have designated plots of few square meters which are packed pretty tight one next to another. They are easy to identify by flags sticking out from something I would call a ''shed''. From time to time I see my neighbours proudly carrying bags of such goodies... I must find out if they also plant a garlic... Sounds like it's very economical from point of view savings few Rappens...
