Cost of living in Neuchatel and typical salary range

Hello all,

I am Avishek. I am planning to move to Neuchatel for a new job. Currently, I work in Munich, Germany. Originally, I am an Indian. I am single and have a masters degree in Microelectronics with 3 years of work experience in Germany and Austria.

I have a few questions below. Your answers would be really helpful for me.

1. How is the work permit procedure for NON- EU person ? I will have a permanent job offer from the company.

2. I will be located in Neuchatel. What is the typical salary range in this region for a semiconductor engineer with masters and 3 years of experience ? I have been offered around 110K CHF/year. Also, is there a place where I can calculate the net salary from brutto ?

3. How expensive is health insurance and pension for this region ?

4. How many days paid vacation are offered in Switzerland normally ? In Germany i have 30 days of paid vacation.

5. How expensive is it to rent an apartment (around 55m2) in Neuchatel ? My budget would not be to spend more than 1200 CHF including heating, electricity and water costs.

6. How expensive is grocery in Neuchatel ?

7. How expensive is the public transportation in Neuchatel ? For example: A monthly ticket.

Thank you very much,
Avishek

Did you check the forum here? You will find loads of threats on any of the items you asked for.

Oh and forget about the CHF 1200 for a flat all cost inclusive. Think of Munich prices and you get an idea

Hi avishek

Welcome to the Forum.
I'm sure you can imagine that many questions are asked over and over again.

At first, many new users don't (as I didn't, for a long time) find the "search" function.
It is at the top right-hand side of your screen.

There, if you enter your "searchword" you'll get a whole list of threads. Some are current, others will not be. Even so, you might have a look to which of those users who posted, back then, are still in Switzerland, and write a PM to them.

The search function one way to find previous threads with similar topics.
Another way is to scroll right down to the bottom of this screen, and the Forum will suggest "similar threads" to you.

You might try "neuchatel cost" or "geneva cost".
Hope that helps you find some others who have already written about their experiences.

Look at comparis /Homegate/SBB, they have all the answers you need to know.

Do you speak french (at least a tiny bit) ?
Otherwise it will be difficult , Neuchatel is not Geneve for example.

It is possible to get a small flat for that price in Neuchâtel.
It may take a bit if searching for but it is perfectly possible.

Health insurance costs are about mid range for Switzerland. Not the highest but not the cheapest either. Check out Comparis to get an idea of premiums.

https://en.comparis.ch/Krankenkassen/Default.aspx

Groceries are the same price as everywhere else in Switzerland so have a look at the other threads on here regarding cost of living.

Can't help with salary as it's not in my field of interest.

The company should sort out the permit for you but it's not usually difficult to get one in Neuchâtel.

You'll get at least 20 days paid holidays per year but probably 25.

Here are the costs for the travel card.

This is the hiring criteria for non-EU nationals.

https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...zulassung.html

And this is the procedure to obtain that permit.

https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...ensablauf.html

And no roegner, a lot cheaper!

And much cheaper if you are prepared to travel by train or car to a little outside towards mountains rather in town by lake- 20 to 30 minutes commute.

Even much closer, in the suburb of Peseux, for instance- you can get a large studio for about 500, and 3 to 3.5 rooms for about 1000. Drive over the moutain or take the train to somwhere like Noiraigue, and you can get even cheaper or much larger for same amount- with a train station with direct trains about 30 mins or 20 mins by car. Depends if you want to be right in town or not.

Re: Cost of living in Neuchatel and typical salary range

Well you're literally the first person that has ever asked these questions here...

1. How is the work permit procedure for NON- EU person ? I will have a permanent job offer from the company.

Company applies for you. Needs to prove that there are no Swiss/EU nationals who could do your job. You need to provide a bunch of documents. Ask your HR. Process takes at least 6-8 weeks from the moment the application is handed in. It can and will not be expedited. There's no guarantee whatsoever that you'll get a permit.

2. I will be located in Neuchatel. What is the typical salary range in this region for a semiconductor engineer with masters and 3 years of experience ? I have been offered around 110K CHF/year. Also, is there a place where I can calculate the net salary from brutto ?

No idea about salaries in your specific industry, but the salary certainly doesn't sound like something to complain about after only 3 years of experience.

3. How expensive is health insurance and pension for this region ?

4. How many days paid vacation are offered in Switzerland normally ? In Germany i have 30 days of paid vacation.

Forget about 30. 20 is the legal minimum, some companies offer 25.

5. How expensive is it to rent an apartment (around 55m2) in Neuchatel ? My budget would not be to spend more than 1200 CHF including heating, electricity and water costs.

www.homegate.ch

6. How expensive is grocery in Neuchatel ?

As expensive as everywhere else in CH. Search the forum.

7. How expensive is the public transportation in Neuchatel ? For example: A monthly ticket.
