Re: Gift ideas for 10-14 years old boy

Isn't there some massive difference between a 10 and a 14 yr old? Ten year old: Lego. 14yr old: Condoms?

Money - you don't know whether he already has the shitty toy you're planning on buying for him, nor would you know whether he would actually like aforementioned shitty toy. Thus money, and he could by himself whatever his precious little heart desires.

Because of course, Uncle Scrooge McDuck, all of the countries in the list have the same currency...

Must have missed that post.

So yeah, Lego, soccer balls with a pump, possibly some soccer jerseys of famous players...

Re: Gift ideas for 10-14 years old boy

Money, money and more money ...

For computer games, kebabs, movies, fashion clothes, electronic gadgets, computer parts like graphic cards to make games work faster and chewing gums needed to bite on something during excitement of playing those games.

I know it from my boy, they grow up so fast. He's 16y/o now and he exploits every opportunity to get more cash in order to make his dreams come true.

Like...condoms? Apparently this is what Ef thinks a 14 y.o. boy needs...

(but they might be right, who knows...I feel sooo old)

That embarrassing puberty period (equally embarrassing for parents) only starts around 16-17y/o and they prentend to be more discreet about it until they get caught ... naked with girlfriends while pretending they have been busy studying together for school assignments.

16-17? More like 12-13 in some cases. That embarrassing puberty period, as you put it, pretty much encapsulates the ages 11 to around 22. Depending on the individual...

Re: Gift ideas for 10-14 years old boy

We have an 11 year old boy in our family. Every year we, the grandparents, and the other siblings, i.e. the aunt and uncle, go here: http://www.wickeduncle.co.uk/

for ideas. Really, all he wants is money for video games but that seems like such a cop-out gift wise.

Have you looked in his wallet recently? I would hazard a guess that he's had a condom sitting in there for a couple of years at least or he did have and he's already used it.
They hand them out every year in the sex education classes from about 12/13 onwards.

Re: Gift ideas for 10-14 years old boy

Have two boys, now both past that age, but:

(from above - spot on)
Legos
fingerless gloves
deodorant

ALSO:
body spray (Axe)
baseball caps
T-shirts - themes: sports teams, video games, movies and Sci Fi characters, NY (and now Chicago Cubs!)
inexpensive watch
electric razor / trimmer
Geek stuff - today's equivalent of the Rubik's cube

Re: Gift ideas for 10-14 years old boy

So can I say that we need to add condoms to our box?

On that note, I think we have reached an agreement on EF puberty line

Re: Gift ideas for 10-14 years old boy

I'd say that since the goods are going to children and young people who, in the first place, don't have a lot of money, one should not include anything that neads more money to maintain it, e.g. batteries. Also, probably, (depending on degree of poverty and availability of infrastructure) not something that beeds to be plugged into electricity to work. And even if you know there will be electricity, no good sending something with the wrong kind of plug if the money to get the right, local one just isn't going to be available to the child.

For this reason, I liked the idea of the football WITH the pump.

A Swiss-knife is an excellent idea. But even if knives are not allowed, you might consider packing a pair of pliers, mini-screwdriver, shifting-spanner (to empoyer the guy to be the one who can fix glasses and small toys of younger kids) along with that chewing gum, hair gel and a cool T-Shirt or cap.

Also, something really small and very beautiful, e.g. a polished mineral stone. Underneath their bravado, teenagers can be quietly sentimental, when they are alone. Besides, it'd give him something he could also give as a gift, when he falls in love.

Re: Gift ideas for 10-14 years old boy

I saw a bunch of young guys of this age at the bus-stop. They were of very mixed origins and mostly of the cool, urban, well-groomed sort, appearance based on hip-hop/gangsta but very toned down.

I was surprised to notice that every single male (a dozen or so) was wearing jewellery. Bracelets of leather, plastic, or fabric (only one had a chain around his wrist), and the same around the neck (though more metal neck-chains, both chunky and delicate).
None was wearing a ring, and a very few had one or both ears pierced with a discrete stud.
