Re: Pick on me because I am (blank)

In the aftermath of the New year celebrations in Köln, Berlin etc. the police were criticised by lefties shouting “RASIST” for targeting dark-skinned, new burghers of ethnic background, happily common sense applied and the generic public more or less told said lefties to go take a hike.

As to opinions in schools: Youngsters should be confronted as early as possible with the fact that there are different opnions around, that therefore they have to make up their own mind (something that seems to be desired less and less - again!) and learn how to argue it ..... not with ifs and coulds / stupid laws and authority ... though.
Definitely.

So if teachers wear such T-Shirts to school it can wake kids up to think about all aspects, as long as the teachers use them to start a constructive discussion.
That's an entirely different situation. Wearing a t-shirt, especially as part of a collective event, is making a political statement. Coming from teachers, who are by definiton (and rightfully) in a position of power and authoritiy, it's not likely to encourage discussion but the exact opposite.

It would be an excellent idea if, say, two teachers with opposing positions and comparable debating skills debated an issue in front of the pupils. But wearing a t-shirt is an entirely different thing, and like wearing religious symbols openly in a laicist coutnry, is a clear no-no regardless of the opinion (religion) presented.

They used to do that in the UK - but with the kids doing the debating. In one Welsh school that was overwhelmingly Labour, only one kid was prepared to take the Tory view on one particular debate. It convinced her of the Tory cause, and the rest is history.

Edwina Currie - former Tory MP.

White genocide conspiracy theory is a white nationalist conspiracy theory that mass immigration, integration, miscegenation, low fertility rates and abortion are being promoted in predominantly white countries to deliberately turn them minority-white and hence cause white people to become extinct through forced assimilation. Or if you don't trust wikipedia, here's a link to a group that disseminate the conspiracy theory.

In those terms, his tweet makes sense, and isn't offensive at all (except to white supremacists). "All I want for Christmas is a tolerant immigration policy, integration between different ethnics groups, more mixed race marriages, and freely available abortion". I'll admit he probably doesn't want lower fertility rates, but the point still hits home.

In that context, why should be be fired? And in that context, it's not a tasteless joke, but rather it is clever satire.
You're not an attorney by any chance, are you?

It reminded me of those endless stories of kids who are sent home from school because of some infraction of the uniform code (skirt too short/tight or too brightly coloured coat or pink hair / buzz cut with a swastika cut into it) then mum is whinging to the papers complaining that it's because they are (*insert ethnic origin*) or poor or a single parent or Catholic or Buddhist or Jedi.

No, it's cos your 13 year old daughter is wearing a skirt which is showing her knickers.

Is it just me or is there some irony in the complaint that these parents didn't want their kids (and I quote) "Walking the streets"?

First thing that came to my mind when this thread appeared was Ali G. My stunningly beautiful friend, who I used to sit next to at work, once used said to our manager "You're picking on me cos I is black". When the rest of us stopped crying laughing, our manager said..."No. I'm picking on you because you're being an absolute Princess today." which was the truth of the matter.

I'll probably get groaned to oblivion, judging by some of the attitudes I see in this thread (like how callously you mention "white supremacists" as being the only people who could get offended by such tweet).

I want to play devil's advocate by saying that it is rather odd to deliberately wish for interracial marriages, as if such thing is inherently good. (I'm not saying it's inherently bad, either.)

Before I proceed, let it be known that I am NOT against interracial marriages nor do I believe in white genocide.

I think we can all agree, as rational people, that Western Society faces many problems, many of them being rather serious. In the face of those who suffer, those who face REAL racism and bigotry, those who in our very comfortable Western Society do not have money for food and don't know where they will sleep tonight, isn't it at least partially reasonable to feel slightly uncomfortable at such tweet?

Labeling those who found offense in the aforementioned tweet as White Supremacists, is vacuous at best and plain malicious at worst.

In before I get called white supremacist

Plato? Kant? Entitled pseudo-enlightened white bastards.....

Quote:
They are said to be the founding fathers of Western philosophy, whose ideas underpin civilised society.

But students at a prestigious London university are demanding that figures such as Plato, Descartes and Immanuel Kant should be largely dropped from the curriculum because they are white.
Quote:
The student union at SOAS, a leading centre for the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, stated that “decolonising” the university and “confronting the white institution” is one of its priorities for the academic year.

It said that “white philosophers” should be studied only “if required”, adding that their work should be taught solely from a “critical standpoint”. “For example, acknowledging the colonial context in which so-called 'Enlightenment' philosophers wrote within,” it added.

Well what he actually tweeted was "All I Want for Christmas is White Genocide" followed by "To clarify: when the whites were massacred during the Haitian revolution, that was a good thing indeed". Obviously these statements are open to interpretation, but I find it rather credulous that you read these with no negative connotations and somehow promoting progressive values.

Anyway that's neither here nor there, I was trying to point out that I belive there is a hard liberal bent instilled in many Western education institutions but that's my opinion, maybe i'm wrong.

Meanwhile two days ago from the Independent:

'Universities could be forced to cater to the demands of a generation of sensitive “snowflake” students if controversial reforms to the rankings system are approved next week, according to leading academics.
Academics have warned the proposed student-centred approach could lead to a “fantastically dangerous" culture of pandering to increasing demands from students for “safe spaces” and for the “no-platforming” of speakers who hold controversial views.
'

Also please see the link greenmount posted above and have a squiz at the poll they conducted

..because I am Ostblock. Learned that today.

I kinda wonder how people interpret that. I can't be bothered to cry outrage and injustice, even if I considered it.

Btw - unies who suck up to the entitlement system lose credibility and reputation and they know it. If customer is always right, and edu quality gets adjusted, guess who loses the most, in the long run.

How much worth will be in "reformed rank" degree? Is there knowledge, work and competence behind a particular grade or is it just a currency to excuse some perceived injustice? Are profs pushed to alter grades, degrees and merit, still credible? Is being immune to all this going to earn you being fired, as a prof, or is it going to earn you even more credibility?

Damn! That means that my entire degree is meaningless.

Do I get credit for having read Augustine and Avicenna? There must be some points to be had for having read Camus and Derrida!

No. Unless it was for a High School degree, like I had to to.

But I was severy Ost-blocked. They even asked me to next read all those in originals. Which I did do (most of those on the reading lists) for other degrees, exactly as my profs predicted.

I do think everybody needs a good amount of philo in highschool. Where is Faltrad to gimme highfive
