Hi everyone,

How about that snow? Since yesterday morning I've had about 50cm of snow outside. I must say I've never seen so much snow in Zurich! A huge branch from one of the trees in our courtyard has collapsed and is blocking access to one side of our townhouse complex.

I'll try and get outside a little later to get some pictures for the archives.

So has anyone else got any stories related to this massive snow fall? How are things in your part of Switzerland?

I know it is for exactly snowfall like this that I bought a Subaru Forester. Nothing like rally-bred 4x4 performance. .

Well I guess if you are driving through the forest and a tree falls on your "forester" due to the weight of snow, then it will be perfect

we lost power yesterday and the joys of home ownership resulted in the gift of Sunday exercise and about 2 tons of snow to move!

Hi All! I just thought I'd post and say how I love all this snow... ok its very inconvenient as far as travel etc goes but the big kid inside just wants to go and play!!

I also noticed that my swiss neighbours seemed to spend a ridiculous amount of time moving snow from one area to another for no good reason... is this a "grown up" excuse for playing in the snow??

Anyone know how long all this snow will be sticking around?

According to one of my Swiss neighbours the last time that it snowed like this in Zurich was back in 1999, although I remember last year we got about the same about of snow on exactly the same day - how do I remember? Because it was my bday. Although last year the snow did not stay around for long and it stopped snowing shortly after the first heavy downfall. So, more snow for about another 7 to 10 days this year. I hope that means we are going to have a HOT summer or maybe it's just wishful thinking.

Yes lets all hope for a HOT summer... >sigh<

Here I am thinking I would finally be able to start cycling to work and it just won't stop snowing...

Cycling?!?!?! Well, don't forget that after the snow is gone we'll have that lovely April rain to hopefully give us some May flowers.

I think it's a plot to confuse everyone. Pick a thread exactly a year from the last post and use it to test observation.

Just how bad is the snow situation on the mountains this year? I was checking out the Hoch Ybrig website and the Talabfahrts haven't been open any of the times I checked, plus there have always been a few runs closed.

This must have been one of the worst skiing years .... ? Anyway, I'm hoping to get across for a quick weekend before the season ends.

It's best described as variable, some weekends the conditions are great then the next total disaster. As for the worst in years, it's certainly the worst for a while but I do remember stepping over green & brown patches on the slopes while skiing in Müren back in 1998.

It is interesting they were right about a hot summer last year.

This weekend should be good for skiing though right...in Berner Oberland the snow was gone below 1700m last weekend, and at 2200m it was melting fast, so it should be much better by now.

Last year we had virtual tons of the white mess by mid march to begin of April, I know, coz i am a landlady-com-janitor and had to shovel it away
In my experience, the last few years it was almost always like that......so keep the warm winter sweaters and such handy for the next week(s)

As for the swiss neighbour 'playing' in the snow, if he is a janitor he has to do it by law( i think by noon it has to be cleared away),if someone slips and breaks something he is liable

...and one year after: it is snowing again

I just thought it would be a shame not to relive this thread... We had it in 2006, 2007 and now 2008... maybe a tradition is born???
