If I had five rappen for every irrelevant post reminding people to use the search function, I'd have Sfr3.57

But, but, but. But, what evil sod priced something at 5.95???? ? Now I have a 5 rappen coin which as any Swiss person would know, is virtually impossible to get rid off! Now I have to go out of my way to find another item priced with a x5 so that I can escape from having to forever carry this bloody tiny coin around in my pocket. | | | | | Just stop handing over those CHF 50 notes at Migros and pay exact change for a week. Your coins will disappear quickly.

Yup! Can confirm it does the trick, makes you unpopular in the queue though.

threpny bits. A tanner? A 1/- | | | | | I'm too young to remember, but when I was a child I was curious why all the 1967 ten cent pieces also had "one shilling" written on them. And of course until the 2006 coin size change we still got the occasional florin in circulation as it was the same size and weight as a twenty cent coin...

Many a worthy cause will be happy to have your 5 Rappen coins...
Flying out of Switzerland? There are several coin boxes in the check-in areas, all currencies gratefully accepted. Swiss even hands out little envelopes on the flight; drop in your unwanted coins, I believe it goes to SOS Kinderdorf.
Want to help those less fortunate here in Switzerland? A very quick google turns up many organizations who can put your unwanted coins to good use. A few from the list:
Do you enjoy spending time in the mountains? Why not support our mountain communities - drop your extra coins in a Bergpatengemeinschaft 'Münzenkuvert': http://www.patenschaftberggemeinden....nzkuvert.html#
Or if you prefer to help children, Petitsuisse Kinderhilfe: http://www.petitsuisse-kinderhilfe.c...der/index.html
Or maybe help those who are disabled?: http://www.procap.ch/Sammeln.156.0.html
Or, use the SBB ticket machines to donate to the Red Cross: http://www.sbb.ch/bahnhof-services/a...automaten.html
Just about every pet shop I've ever been in has a coin collection can for an animal charity (Animals Asia, World Wildlife Foundation, local rescues) somewhere around the check out.
Many monasteries/churches do a lot of good works behind the scenes - next time you are taking visitors to Einsiedeln, St Gallen, etc, drop your coins in a collection box.
Or simply take your coins to your favorite charity - afterall, Jeder Rappen Zählt. (Every Rappen counts.)

We put anything <1.- into an old Bushmills tin and take it to the bank periodically. Wife did that last week and got 150.- from it, and it was only 1/3 full.
then she went ahead and put it into an account for the kids! I was hoping to get a couple of nights down the pub with it.
How inconsiderate.

5 rpn don't hang around in my purse for long on account of the village mobile bakery selling a selection of 5rpn sweeties. On a Friday, the children go on a "sweetie walk" down to Mittagstisch past the bread van and mysteriously on a Friday, any 5 rpn I might have had, quite disappear.
So I am suitably chastised by these tales of saving and investing for their futures (future dental treatment ..)

My girl had a 'sweetie box', filled with stuff from Grandma in England and I worried like mad.
Now she's 17 and has perfect, strong teeth
And as for those 5 Rappens - yeah, just save them up. You can also use them in some parking machines (Migros, I think) and luckily, my school coffee machine takes them. |

I let the children collect the 5 rap coins in their money boxes.
Then take them down the local ZKB once a year to put them in their Savings Accounts.
The ZKB staff are of course absolutely delighted to receive so many little coins. Ahem. |

a twenty cent coin... | | | | | correction 5p = 1 shilling,
florin = 2 shilling = 10p
old uk money, 20 shilling to the pound, 12 pence to the to the shilling
Decimal money, 100 pence to the £ = 20 x 5p pieces / or 10 x florin
back to original post, usually try and use up the small change in a supermarket, before getting to the cash, try and work out some small change how much, so that when paying the bill it is quick to use up the smaller amount with a larger amount, as do not like to hold up the people at the cash till

As kids, we used to super-glue 1p coins to the pavement... and see if any tight-fisted old gits try and pick them up... it's good for a larf !....

In the 1967 decimal conversion 1 shilling was converted to ten cents, and one pound to two dollars. So a florin was two shillings, which was converted to 20c. So I was, and am, right. | | This user would like to thank cst for this useful post: | |

NZ changing one pound to two dollars seems to me to have been a simplier convert than the UK £ converting 240d to 100 (new) p.
ps did enjoy my visit to NZ although it was only for one night.

Although I do wish the US would get rid of the penny and switch permanently to a $1 coin rather than just flirt with the Sacagawea while keeping the Washington bill in circulation. |

Anthony.
