Re: Canada vs. Switzerland

The doctor situation in Canada is embarrassing. Truly.

What makes it even more annoying is that a British/South African/Indian doctor is typicall WAY better than a Canadian one. They actually know how to solve problems. With Canadian doctors (and also the case I am finding in CH), I am the one who does the diagnosis and asks the relevant questions.

It's an unfounded arrogance that comes with the professions in Canada. When my father arrived in Canada as a Chartered Engineer who had been practising in the UK, they asked him to do ALL the examinations. He told them to go to hell and only took the ethical one. They eventually agreed.

The strategy seems to be working - i've never once met anyone who wanted to drink canadian beer
Oh Weejeem, your wit can be overwhelming. I'll sway your opinion of Canadian beer.

My choice would definitely be - Canada.
First off:no language barrier.
Then:different (better) life style. People seem more open to other nationalities, things are more laid back and you get to actually enjoy life while working and earning more and having more options as well.
I can imagine lots of people would have a problem with language, especially those settling in Quebec outside Montreal.

There is no arguing Vancouver is expensive, due to lower salaries and higher housing costs. I will also agree that Vancouver has suffered some major inflation in the past 3 years. But I still disagree that eating out here can be compared to there. I used to eat out every night there at good restaurants, spending not more than 40 bucks including drinks. No way you can do that here at comparable restaurants, if you can even find such things. I think we will have to disagree. You are the first person I have encountered who would disagree on eating out. It's the first thing Vancouverites and Canadians mention when visiting here/moving here. My parents had a shock at the bills here. For example, at a Thai place in YVR, a typical seafood dish will be 13+tax+ tip. Here, it will be 26 at absolute minumum, but typically > 30. Sure you can find a few places to keep it low, but in Vancouver you don't have to search it out.

You can even go to the Irish Heather, a great gastro pub, and get a fancy meal + pint for under 20. Impossible here. Even at a crappy pub here, a club sandwich is > 20.

(The grad student was just an example for the low end. I lived as a professional too equivalent to here.)

Ditto for clothing. Sure, H&M can match the cheaper end. But mid-end, it is MUCH more expensive here. The easiest proof of that is look at the price tags on internartional labels, where you will see the CH price is 50% more than the CDN price. Again, this is the view of most I have encountered, and hence why people shop in Germany to save.

The lower taxes do compensate.
How would you compare it to cost of the downtown east side? Is there an equivalent area in Zurich

Not quite sure what bee is in your bonnet but it seems that you don't like Foreign doctors who are not trained in North America. My husband has nothing to do with this thread.
not me, the Canadian system does not like/recognize them. I was giving the reason.

I beg to differ, your comments are statements not reasons.

There is a much more interesting discussion about this subject in the article I posted earlier.

Was that directed at me? I agree, eating out at restaurants is cheaper in Vancouver than Switzerland. There's tons of amazing restaurants in the Lower Mainland, and the stiff competition keeps prices low. Especially in regards to ethnic cuisine, there's lots of hole-in-the-wall type of places that serve great authentic food at really low prices.

I was talking more about grocery shopping, what you pay for cheese, milk, meat, etc. Some things are less expensive (meat) but other things are more expensive than here (dairy). I didn't find that grocery shopping for basic food things in Vancouver was a lot cheaper than here.

Rent-wise the DTES is the most expensive part of town as the poor souls can only pay day-to-day, and at a rate of 25 bucks a night min, that's a lot of rent for a tiny, shitty, infested room.

Since banks won't give them accounts, they also pay exorberant fees to cash their welfare cheques to the corrupt likes of Money Mart. And so on...
