Christmas Cards outdated or not?

I have been making my own cards, including Xmas cards now for many years, and every year AFTER xmas, I vow NOT to handmake cards again for next year, and when next year Xmas comes, I find myself sitting hours and making my special Xmas cards again.I think its special, and ja...know in my heart that many people throw away those cards - even if I sat hours making it
Every year, I handmake about 25 cards, post them all over the world to friends and family...and on average, I get back about 2 Xmas cards yearly. BUT, get back a lot of email wishes, and email thingies that has bells and whatyouhave it on.

Do you send out Xmas cards like me, or do you just click on the mouse button, and forward a message that you got frm someone that you though is cute, ...

Any thoughts/experiences?

Re: Christmas Cards outdated or not?

I still do Christmas cards, although I can't be figged making my own. I normally stock up on a bumper box from one of the card shops in the UK whenever I am over and send them out.

We normally do a family update letter with photos and whatnot and send it to close family (ever conscious that extended family and friends might not give a monkey's about our little angel's latest achievement).

For the UK cards, it works out cheaper to send the wad of cards in one envelope to my mum and she distributes from there (either by hand or by post).

I think living apart from family makes you do the Christmas card thing more as you want to keep in touch. Maybe if we were still in the UK we wouldn't bother.

Fully aware that it is not exactly environmentally PC but hey, nobody's perfect.

Re: Christmas Cards outdated or not?

I love my Christmas cards too and I do send more than I receive but it's
worth it..a lot of older people don't have computers and still appreciate
an old-fashioned Christmas card sent from the heart.Good on you,Kalahari
girl, for making your own cards.I keep most cards that I receive, especially
when I see that the person has gone to a lot of effort and/ or written a special message.I love emailing but I find ecards a bit impersonal.

Re: Christmas Cards outdated or not?

I always send out Xmas & New Year cards but do not send them to people that I see a lot of.
I send them to people I have met over the years and we exchange news etc and what has been happening in our lives and maybe slip a photo inside. My mother died in 1973 and her oldest friend sends me a card yearly and she is 91!!!
When Xmas is over I go through all my cards and I do tend to keep the handmade ones as it is nice to know that that extra effort has gone into them so I am sure that the people that you send them to probably do keep your cards.
Regarding email cards etc - I have never had one - maybe it is something that is more for younger people but I think I would still prefer a written greeting

Re: Christmas Cards outdated or not?

I'm too lazy for the handmade ones, but I do send Christmas/Holiday Cards every year. I think it's a great way to let those individuals in your life know that you are thinking of them and wishing them well.
I think your cards sound special and I'm sure whoever is lucky enough to receive them greatly appreciate all your efforts.

Before you all go off shopping for cards, wrapping paper and decorations, please read this. And merry christmas.

I use some of last year's Chrimbo cards as gift tags but the others get recycled and, of course, the decorations are recycled.

Every year.

Cos I'm a tightwad and won't splash more cash at Globus on overpriced baubles and tinsel...

Apparently you should get a real Chrimbo tree rather than an artificial because the real trees from sustainable sources have less of an environmental impact when it comes to disposal.

So we've got that covered, too. Chuffing pine-needles and all...

Re: Christmas Cards outdated or not?

Back home, in Cape Town i would make my own xmas and birthday cards even knowing that eventually it might get thrown away. Cards are not outdated then why would Hallmark still be in business? Look at all the cards in Manor and other shops. I do now click on the button when it comes to family and friends at home, but to my mother who has no internet connection and cant be bothered, i send that special handmade card, bless.

Re: Christmas Cards outdated or not?

mmhhmm, I have not made this year's Xmas cards YET, but I have made a very personal .jpg file thingie on Photoshop. Made a 'creation' with pics of us as a family, all in the snow, laughing and playing, and the kids sitting in a snowed under treehouse in the forest., with a nice personal message.
So, I thought to send that off to people on email...since I have also made that 'almost by hand'.
Ok...gotta dash now, must start making my real cards

Re: Christmas Cards outdated or not?

I usually send very few cards although this year (my first here) I think I will do the update letter and photo inside.

I adore handmade cards and keep every single one I get! I get the kids to make cards for their friends birthdays and they always enjoy it. At Christmas I do not have the time of patience to make them myself.

cheers
Larissa

Re: Christmas Cards outdated or not?

I've always send Christmas cards to our friend around the world, but this year I am going to send email (www.bluemountain.com) cards for them, except for Mommy, she wants the real card, like to hang it up during the festive season.

Re: Christmas Cards outdated or not?

I usually try to buy cards that raise funds for charities myself. That was the origional idea of Xmas Cards, wasn't it? It's nice if they are printed on recycled card aswell, just so I'm taking care of the enviroment with my season of goodwil gesture

Re: Christmas Cards outdated or not?

I stopped sending cards (except to mummy who would disown me if none arrived) and instead made a calendar of Swiss pics for our UK friends.

I think that was a little more useful and less likely to get thrown out.
