| | | My lappy...she died on my lap this morning...
Ya my computer is fried...touchpad is almost completely non-responsive so i have to use the keyboard for everything, the thing is freezing up on me all the time and to make matters worse, yesterday i dropped my external harddrive off the coffee table for the third time this year, losing all my music.
OH, and I'm sick with the flu
I'm thinking about getting one of the new Macbooks, only in Switzerland to buy one they bend you over and have their way with you...price wise that is.
If I were to buy one in Canada I think I would be saving 300 to 400CHF, only they wont ship a Canadian product over here (duh). So I can either get one here with a funky keyboard and more money, or I get my sister to buy one and ship it over.
What would be my best bet?
...and don't say "Don't buy a Mac"

These people will haggle if you go into their shop in my experience: http://dataquest.ch/
You can get machines with US keyboards from both them and apple.ch

I got my MacBookPro in the UK and got the 17.5% VAT back and this made it a bit cheaper than here (obviously you need to use it here first so its used) and it has an English keyboard (not sure if there is any difference between UK and US keyboards).
This was my first Mac and I love it, never going back!

Oh, need help with your laptop? Somehow I thought this thread would be about your dead child. You might want to consider a more appropriate thread title.

...and don't say "Don't buy a Mac" | | | | | Firstly, DO buy a Mac. We bought a Mac Book back in March of this year. We purchased it here in Switzerland but ordered it from the Swiss Apple site. We had 4 options of different keyboard layouts. We chose the US layout as that is what we are used to.
Yes we forked out more bucks for it than if we had bought it in the US. Maybe if we had shopped around some more we could have gotten a better deal, but hind sight is always 20/20.

Please can you change your title, it's horrible to read and rather insensitive for a public Forum.

When I'm writing "My baby...she died on my lap this morning.." I thought it would be more than obvious that first I meant "my baby" as in "my darling" and not an infant, and second that if I ad a child that died this morning the last thing I would do was announce it on a forum.
Geez
Thanks to everyone that helped, to the others... why don't you laugh a little now and then

I asked you very nicely to change your title "my baby died on my lap.." as many, many parents have had babies die and have suffered miscarriages and the title was insensitive for a public forum.. sort of common sense do you not think? so why on earth did you groan me? don't believe I had a go at you but your title... | | This user would like to thank Swisstree for this useful post: | |

(& before anyone starts, I'm a [computer] life long pro Mac user. I just think that the laptops are very over priced these days)

How old is the laptop - take it to the apple store and get them to check it - we had one that had a motherboard problem and the first sign was a problem with the trackpad which extended to some of the keys - we thought it was an issue of 'wearing out' then the screen started malfunctioning - we got it replaced for no cost..
Also, they seem to track recall issues pretty heavily, so if it's a known problem, well you might just find that they have to replace the part for free!
We're mac all through here - sure, I can use the other systems...but love my Mac...
Also, a friend of mine had a battery problem with one bought online through ebay and he took it to the apple store and because those batteries were recalled, the battery was replaced for free even though no warranty and not the original owner...

Hint hint:
If you have any 'friends' who are affiliated with a University here and would be nice enough to act as your purchasing agent, they can get a reduction of between 11 and 17% from the public prices on apple.ch. (It has to be delivered to their address, but that's hardly an insurmountable problem.) US keyboards are also an option at no additional cost. Shipping is normally just a few days.
But you didn't hear it from me....
