Should the Shops be open all 7 days?

Since it is coming closer to the festive season for some, would your prefer for shops to be open on Sunday's too? may be to ease the stress of shopping through out the week? or do you feel its not right!

In some other countries around the world it is accepted but in some not.

Re: Should the Shops be open all 7 days?

Back in the UK the shops are open 7 days a week, and some do not even close at all, open 24 hours.

An other option that should be added to the poll is "I would quite like the shops to stay open for my own convenience but I realise that it would not be practical for shop employees with families"

If I am not mistaken this has already been voted on in Switzerland and was rejected because people feel that it would be unfair to shop employees.

I don't know about other cantons, but here in Basel there will be Sunday trading on the 14th and 21st of December.

My personal preference is that grocery stores should stay open or have longer hours. Everything else we can live without.

You're not obliged to work on a Sunday if you don't want.... Have you ever thought that there are people who actually like/want/prefer/ have to work on weekends?
If people want to be with their families nobody is telling them not to...

Re: Should the Shops be open all 7 days?

I only wish they were open slightly longer during the week, although it does stop me working at the office too late.

I'm pretty much used to the Sunday thing now, and stock up, it's still possible to go to the bahnhof if I missed anything.

It could be argued that if a shop were to open on a Sunday, a certain number of their employees would have to work. Should the required number not be available, new staff would have to be emplyed, probably at the expense of those that refuse to work Sundays.

If you are desperate for essentials you can pop along to either the main train station, Enge or Stadelhofen to stock up on a Sunday.

Petrol stations have a supply of foodstuffs, too.

I work 100% so have limited time to do my shopping but I like the fact that Sunday isn't really a trading day - it forces me to spend time with my family doing family stuff.

The UK is just crazy the other way - you can go to Tesco at 2 am to buy a computer, if you like. Why??

Re: Should the Shops be open all 7 days?

Lots of people work on a Sunday. Health care, police, public transport, utilities, manufacturing, hotels and restaurants, the self employed to name but a few. Why shouldn't retailers and other service providers be free to operate on Sunday if they want to as long as employees who want to have it get to take time off with their families. But that's down to rostering.

If you need to be forced to spend time with your family, that is your fault. It is insane that in 2008 people dont really have the option to do their weekly grocery shopping, especially as opening hours during the week are so restricted.

Re: Should the Shops be open all 7 days?

Almost every shop shut down at 5pm on a Saturday I find very annoying. The only day of the week where one has a bit of extra time for shopping ...

I think, as someone pointed out, it did go to the vote but was voted no so I guess the way it is now fits in with the wishes of the majority.

If people are hellbent on working on a Sunday, they should choose a profession from your list above.

I wonder has anyone been kicked out of store for shopping too late or even locked in the store and forgotten about?

Bad choice of phrase but thank you for making a thing of it anyway...

Like I said, it is not as if it is IMPOSSIBLE to do grocery shopping on a Sunday because there are places where you can shop. Just because one can't park one's 4x4 in front of a mega-super-hypermarket at 8.30 pm on a Sunday and stock up with a mountain of weekly shop doesn't really make Switzerland's retail policy "insane".

Re: Should the Shops be open all 7 days?

There was once a news item about shops opening on a Sunday and they interviewed a young student who was working on a Saturday in a big department store. He was very enthusiastic and said something like:

"I am really for it. Working on a Sunday would be great for us students. It would give us more work possibilities and the hours would be payed 1.5 times (normal working hours) on top of that."

...Except that if working on a Sunday becomes the norm there is no way that the companies are going to continue paying the hours 1.5 times !

As far as I am aware, the shops are open on Sundays in the run up to Christmas; Zurich city 7 & 21st and Glattzentrum on 14th. Coop city in Oerlikon is open this Sunday as well.
Surely this is enough? For the rest of the year I think it's quite nice not to be able to go shopping and, as has been said before, there are places open if anyone is desperate!
