Shopping in Germany

ANyone know of any decent shopping centres close to the German Border with Switzerland. Preferably one with an Ikea close by , or an indoor one ? if not then an outdoor one with plenty of shops ?

thanks

Re: Shopping in Germany

Lots. Did you have anywhere specific in mind?

The entire north of Switzerland borders on Germany, from Basel all the way to Lake Constance.

Re: Shopping in Germany

We've been over to Feldkirch and Bregenz in Austria which is also good for shopping and, give or take, is about the same journey time.

The border crossings aren't so scrupulously manned either [whistles innocently...]

They have just built a new shopping center in St.Gallen with an Ikea we could also go together, then come back to my place for some dinner (sorry not fish and chips though)

Re: Shopping in Germany

Lidl starts in East Switzerland in January. We have found our local Lidl store in Frauenfeld, the cark park is blocked at the moment and there are no signs on the building as yet.

For those who wants to park in Kreuzlingen, you can park nect to the Bodensee Arena and walk 5 minutes over the border to the Lago centre in Konstanz. The border is not guarded, just a camera.

Sutter - Have you been to Santispark 5 minutes from the IKEA. Improved shopping, shops are open to 21:00 on Friday, Migros restraurant until 23:00 and the pools and new slides are great for kids. http://www.saentispark.ch/

Enough beer and I might even find Jar Jar Binks less annoying.

Re: Shopping in Germany

We do nearly all our shopping outside of CH with some pleasure i have to say.

Singen had a huge Walmart until about 6m ago and now its a someone else, Hit I think. Haven't been back since. Because...

We now go to Waldshut where there is a Familia which is just perfect for all your money saving but still higher quality that Switzerland needs. Also, becausae its a got about a dozen crossing points nearby its easy to drive back over the one of your choice.

I'd add that Waldshut is just past waterfalls near Schaffshausen (SP?) and I guess about 45km outside of ZH. The clever thing being that its closest to ZH but possibly not as quick due to the single lane roads.

We also shop in AT occasionally but Feldkirch is the local spot BUT the problem with Feldkirch is that the prices are higher than 'normal' Austrian prices. Mrs Happy looked up the cost of nappies on DM or Schlecker.at and so we expected to pay X EUR per pack and ended up paying about X+30% in Feldkirch - from a branded store FFS! I expect further away from CH/LI might prove more competative.

Lastly, for cheese and bacon, I now get that inside CH at a special boutique just outside of ZH. Of course. ;-)

edited to change "45km outside of CH" to "45km outside of ZH"

just to add that I've founds Ikea CH to be the same prices as Ikea EU so I wouldn't buy over the border and bring back. Maybe marginal differences but when you factor in teh van mileage, covefrting your chf to eur, tax, effort etc I really wouldn't bother.

http://www.ikea.com/ch/de/catalog/products/S99840456

Karlstad recliner thing, CHF 449

Or

EUR 275

Todays FX rate (or more accurately last nights close) – 0.65

So 449 CHF = EUR 292.

But 4 months ago 0.62 (for example) was 278 EUR

So I’d say they price the same across Europe but you may be able to arbitrage the FX rate if you really want to..
