Henning Mankell's "The Pyramid"

I'm a Wallander addict and I love the bleak depiction of Swedish life.
It makes even Switzerland look cheerful.......

I lived for quite a while in the part of Sweden that Mankell writes about, it wasn't that bleak :-)

I thought this was a great book. I sobbed my way through the last couple of chapters. Not sure how its going to convert to film though...

me too, love Wallander. Have you seen Kenneth Branagh's Wallander, was on TV before xmas - wasn't expecting much but I was gobsmacked at how good it was.

My favorite books at the moment are the Historian C. J Sansoms' mysteries set in Tudor England, vibrant and really good reads.

I recently came back from India, and as a result am currently reading:

The Ramayana - Ramesh Menon.
White Mughals- William Dalrymple.
The Namesake and Interpreter of Maladies - Jhumpa Lahiri.

I really recommend The Namesake. Reading it... You know when you cut open a pomegranate, and your hands stain red with the juice of the pips inside? And then you shake the shell and there's a rain of ruby coloured seeds?

That's what the book is like. A rain of gemstones. Its just stunningly crafted.

And that is a strange metaphor.

Ha! Isn't Mankell's descriptive bleakness all about Wallander reflected in the landscape - reminds me a bit of the young Pip trapped in his life and the bleak Landscape described by Dickens in Great Expectations..

What I loved about the TV adaptation of Wallander was the depiction of the light and how it highlighted the dishevelled and life-beaten Wallander(Kenneth Brannagh..) amazing, they got it just right

Haven't seen that but I can imagine Brannagh being good at the role. My memories of Sweden are fond, it has a wildness about some parts of it but there's great beauty in the land.

I would also compare prices against www.bookdepository.co.uk as they dont charge postage and will send worldwide their prices are reasonable and shipping is quick. Im reading Danny Wallace "Friends like These".

Right now I'm reading 'Cesar's Way' by Cesar Millan the Dog Whisperer and 'A Cook's Tour' by Anthony Bourdain.

I just got a present of A Thousand Splendid Suns, am looking forward to get a start on it. Read Kite Runner in record time last year. For me it's always a feast or a famine.

Can recommend all of them.

Have just dashed through all eight Wallander mysteries in french . Pinched from Mrs. Zappa's bedside table. The first ever novels I've read in that language. They were gripping enough to get me to take the plunge, after only 20+ years of speaking .

Having "run out of road", I've moved on to "The Voices" by Arnaldur Indridason. It's Icelandic and excellent for any Wallander fans.

I currently read on iPhone 3G using eReader "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fenimore Cooper, which is quite tough read considering the descriptive language:

Wallander 3 -part TV series starring Kenneth Branagh has won more awards I'm sure they'll adapt more of the books soon - something to look forward to
