"Good calories, bad calories". Very instructive! Cholesterol is not bad, butter is good. Obesity's cause is not the fat we are eating, but...all the carbos (pasta, rice, sweets, biscuits, cakes, beer,...), but keep the non-refined carbos!

Yes, I ploughed through them very quickly myself. I found them on the repetitive side. Gripping, yes, but you can skip a few pages in between and not miss out on anything important, especially in the first book. The following books get better IMO. I must say, I prefer Anne Rice's vampire stories form the 90s - they made better movies too. I expect it's a "generation" thing.

Joanne Harris is on my favourite author list; just waiting for the next one...

If you like Stephenie Meyer and fantasy books, I'd suggest you look at Inkheart and Inkspell by Cornelia Funke. Also intended for younger (than me) readers. She originally writes in German, but these have been translated. Inkheart has been made into a movie, which should be out this year. There's a third part: "Inkdeath" - the reviews aren't very good, though, and I haven't yet decided if I want to read it.

I seem to be still stuck on this one, but have had a look at a few others in between.

Les Miserables (second time) on my phone. An utterly amazing book.

Mars trilogy, by Kim Stanley Robinson. A bit turgid in places, but the books on the possibility of Mars colonisation.

Yes Minister - Jonathan Lynn and Antony Jay. An accurate portrayal of British Goverment in the eighties.

Thud - Pratchett.

Just started reading The red book by Meaghan Delahunt - but it's yet to be found out if it is any good or not...

I recommend Shantaram, a fantastic book, it will take you on one hell of a trip, dont be put off by the size of it and the fact there are no pictures.

Most recent reads, are 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', - I bet you cant put it down!!

And currently reading the second one in the triliogy, 'The Girl who played with Fire', also proving to be another great read.

Also I like the Mankell books (miserable bugger, BBC adaptations are great too, for a follow up)

Just finished the 3 Steig Larsson books(available at the Zurich main library where membership is free ), they were more entertaining than memorable, and looking for my next book(s), anyone read anything you would't be embarrassed to suggest? Thanks

If you liked those try the series of books by Henning Mankell.

I agree with Richard -- actually think that Mankell's Wallander series is generally much better than the Millennium Trilogy.

The English section is in the basement and completely devoid of people but filled to the brim with mint condition English books!

In the spy thriller genre, I have liked Daniel Silva. Spy Gabriel Allon is sort of the Israeli Jason Bourne...

I also read the Mars Trilogy last year...excellent stuff!
