Coins and old clothes

Can anyone suggest what i could do with:
- Coins. is there a place i could exchange them for notes?
- old clothes & shoes. Is there a place i can productively dispose them off?

Re: Coins and old clothes

Coins --> Bank, use them to make a purchase or pawn them off on a friend
Clothes & shoes --> Brockenhaus or dumpster for old clothes & shoes

I have been wondering the same thing myself. In the States we have machines were you dump your change and get bills for them. I dont know if there is anything like that here.

Most banks offer exactly this service. Low cost for account holders, higher
cost for walk-ins. I just paid about 16 Franks to deposit 1600.- Franks in
change into my account. Thus, about 1%.

The Post accepts rolled coins, check with your local Post for details.

Re: Coins and old clothes

At the Raiffeissen Bank it's free to change your coins into notes if you're a customer and about five Francs if you aren't.

Take your old clothes to A Brockenstube (similar to the Salvation Army) or wait until you receive a large plastic bag in the post to collect them for charity.

It is a known fact, that Raiffeisen is not a country or Canton wide single
unity. Each (or two to three have combined) operates on their own to
make their own bank. They buy/lease the rights to use the name
Raiffeisen. OK.

Each Raiffeisen has their own rules. My example of 1% was from a
Raiffeisen here in East Switerland. The local UBS takes the change and
sends it off to be counted, thus you loose control (out of sight) before it
is counted. There is a Credit Suisse local as well, not sure how they do
it since I am not a CS customer.

So, it may be free... it may cost. Even if it does, it's better than rolling it
yourself and taking it to the Post or Bahnhof

Re: Coins and old clothes

Credit Suisse has ATM's that allow you to make coin deposits free of charge to account holders. One for example at Paradeplatz. It sorts and counts and then credits your account.

Where to donate clothes

Is there anywhere to donate clothes in the Zurich area? i.e. something like Goodwill or Salvation Army?

Re: Where to donate clothes

Actually you might find plastic collection bags in your post box about nowish. There are collections organised around Zurich that coincide with spring cleaning, end of each season etc. They come back on a set date to collect in the whole neighbourhood starting bright and early.

Re: Coins and old clothes

I have a 2 Fr. coin from 1886. As it is that old, I could sell it to a collector (if a collector would want it...) but otherwise who would want it?

That's probably worth quite a lot in fact. There is a website where you can get approximate values for old coinage. I'll have to go look for it.
