Re: '09 Cold Wave

You can see that Pfaffikersee has ice forming on it at the moment.

and Greifensee's temperature is down to about 2deg. It was 3.5 degrees when I checked its temperature last Thursday!

Lutzelsee (sp?) near Hombrechtikon is apparently frozen, but not thick enough to walk on yet.

I do not want to damage your impression of cosmopolitan Swiss people, but the German word for bitter is... bitter

"Very cold" means "bitterkalt". Could it be that he was actually not talking English to you?

He couldn't have been saying 'bitte' could he?

In 1963 I was in the North west of the UK where it snowed on Boxing Day and didn't melt until mid-March. Every day was at or below zero. All fresh water lakes and even the sea froze into white crumbly waves left at the high tide mark. ..........The Lake of Zurich froze that year strong enough to walk and skate on it. This requires something like 40 days and nights below zero...
Here is a short story and photos of the 1963 frozen Zurisee.

BTW Jobst Brandt is a bit of an internet cycling legend (up there with Sheldon Brown). Worth reading his ride reports in the Alps which cover a near 50 year period!

So that's why they invented sexual intercourse!

Sorry to take this a bit off topic, but if you like reading about Jobst Brandt's cycling adventures, then you'll also enjoy reading Jerry Nilson's. Both sites are good ways to find out about mountain roads that you never knew existed, which are often the best kind.

Re: '09 Cold Wave

There have been a few interesting cold-related stories in Germany that have come up recently. My favourites so far are:

- The Elbe is frozen. There's no river traffic on the Elbe south of Hamburg.
- The holy water in Cologne cathedral had frozen.
- Gravediggers have had to swap shovels for jackhammers.

Damn...that sort of messed up my less than truthful ending to what was otherwise Gospel!
