1% milk

Does anyone know if any of the supermarkets sell 1% milk?

The fully skimmed seems to be too much like water, but the 2.5% skimmed stuff is too rich for my liking

I've always liked the 1% milk you can buy in the States (apart from the fact that it's crammed full of hormones etc) and now you can even buy it in Sainsbury's in the UK

But I've never seen it in Switzerland. For a nation with so many cows, in fact I've been rather surprised at the lack of variety when it comes to milk products (apart from my beloved rivella of course)

Re: 1% milk

I've been looking around as well - so far I've only found 1,8% - don't remember if it was at COOP or Migros (fairly sure it was Migros). I buy milk very rarely that's why I don't remember where....

Re: 1% milk

I found 1.5% milk ( pink Grandprix label ) at Coop - 1.5L for CHF1.45

Semi-or low-fat milk with 1.5% to a maximum 1.8% fat

Can you not buy 2.5% and fully skimmed and mix the two?

Re: 1% milk

Or just dilute the milk with water..? Pretty much what it tastes like back home in the States anyway (I prefer real milk).

Re: 1% milk

Manor has variety of enriched, skimmed, semi-skimmed milks, I ocassionally buy ours there. I think it is 1,5%. The only setback is it is UHT. On the other hand it is in bigger bottles, so that's nicer. We only have it as a back-up plan in our pantry in case we run out of milk. The full fat milk is supposed to be actually much healthier - the dairy fats help one's body absorb calcium better. So we went back to full fat milk, don't go over board with it just exercise more

Re: 1% milk

Have you tried looking in the Casino store? There's one in the Flon district of Lausanne. Since they're a French chain, they seem to have a different supplier than Migros or Coop and so have a different selection for many items, which may include milk. Good luck!

Re: 1% milk

The blue one is Valflora Vita Milk - 1.8%
The green one is Valflora Slimline Milk - 0%
Both available at Migros.
Both UHT.

This is a good tip. We have a big Casino store in Monthey which we also use to source stuff we can't get from the Swiss chains.

For a nation with so many cows, to have just pure real milk really is the nice part about it and the more variety of products there is, the more junk you get ...

Re: 1% milk

Isn't the Migros milk that you get in the green M-Budget tetra-pack container that costs CHF 1.95, isn't that close to 1% milk... I think it might be 1.5% milk? (Correct me if I am wrong).

Another question is, how come it doesn't go bad even though it is left outside, i.e. not refrigerated?

Well in Austria you can get (fresh - not just UHT) 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2.something% and full fat. Choice - and no more junk than here.

Because even bacteria won't touch UHT?

Re: 1% milk

I didn't know what UHT was until just now (Googled it).

Quote Wiki: However in the North American market, consumers have been uneasy about consuming milk which is not delivered under refrigeration, and have been much more reluctant in buying it.

I remember the first time I went to the supermarket and realized the milk wasn't refrigerated, and thought it was a little bit odd. But I tried it out nonetheless because I cannot drink milk with greater than 2% milk fat due to the cholesterol and that Migros milk has 1.5%. I was suprised that most of the milk was like 3.5%, etc which would be equivalent to homo milk in NA(?).

Re: 1% milk

Recently bought a 500ml pack of 1.8% UHT milk at Aldi ('coz other half was away) and it tasted like white-nothing. Have been drinking real (low-fat) milk for three years here and forgot how bad UHT tasted.

The "skimmed milk mixed with 2.5% milk" sounds like a great idea except we'd have to open two packs, which won't last longer than 4 or 5 days (those from Coop only last 2 or 3 days).

Re: 1% milk

UHT has been heat-treated to take the germs out, so it can last longer. Some say they don't like pasteurised milk for the same reason. Personally, I can't taste a huge difference between low-fat pasteurised milk and low-fat, REFRIGERATED UHT milk. I think if plain old pasteurised became room temperature and you drank it before the bacteria could alter the taste substantially, it wouldn't taste all that nice either.

The main thing is that Swiss cows (and all EU cows) are rBST-free, which means there are no weird growth hormones making their way into your milk.
