I was told by a 'Jackeen' that since the death of 'the Long Fellow' - Ireland has spurted ahead in leaps & bounds.

There's certainly a better quality of Life there than hitherto...

It's good to see them forging ahead as well - after so long in the Doldrums.

'Jackeen' - inhabitant of Dublin.

Long fellow or not, the world changed and Ireland with it.
It is a consolation to know people are still smiling even with all the belt tightening at the moment though. But then again, at least there a smile still doesn't cost anyhing or hurt anyone.

Makes we wonder why I ever left Denmark....

....hm, then again, 67% marginal tax rate, 25% vat, 180% (yes 180%) car tax may have had something to do with it

Re: Something nice 7th Happiest Place

I hate to be the party pooper, but I am yet to meet someone who has moved to the northern european countries, who scored highly, and found the whole experience happy. My first question has always been "how is that, when they score so highly on these surveys about satisfaction and happiness?" and often the response centres on the argument that they are unambitious and thus mediocrity, not overachievement, is the target.

I'm not trying to bag people who originate from there, I just think that with suicide rates notoriously high in some of those countries and such feedback from its guests, it doesn't seem to be the most solid survey.

Same here. Skandinav countries (Den/Fin) I've been to, struck me as pretty dour, depressing places. Socialist paradises.

P.S. If people there are so happy... how come they are not smiling?

I don't think the 1000 watt beaming grin is these countries' style. These countries have got good infrastructure, education, low unemployment, good health care in common so maybe that has something to do with it.

Having said that, next week we'll be reading another "survey" that puts a whole new set of countries in the "top happy" table because they will look at a whole different set of criteria and Switzerland, Denmark and whatever will be scraping the bottom of the barrel because their people don't beam their dental work with annoying regularity.
