Also remember that the train times quoted on the SBB website are from the station to station. If you also need to add a 10 bus ride at each end plus the hanging about waiting from buses/trains your commute door to door time quickly adds up.
Actually, if you plug in your home and work addresses in, it'll calculate a door-to-door route, including walking times.

As nice as Swiss trains can be, when you add 3 hours to your day for commuting it makes week day activities harder to motivate yourself for.
Depends upon what you're ready to accept. AFAIR, the RAV can force you, if you're receiving unemployment insurance, to take a job, as long as the commute time is no more than two hours each way.

I know expats who commute from Shaffhausen and Bern to work in Zurich - short-term it's a possibility, not sure if it's worth it in the long term...

If my work was laptop-based and I had a season first class train ticket, I'd happily commute and work on the train every day...or just chill out - definitely better than commuting in a car, which is the norm for Australia...

Mum commuted from Schaffhausen to Zch daily until 1-APR-44 until GrANDDAD told her to take logdings overhere. The ""mistake"" of some USAF chaps made me a ZUERCHER --- On the same evening Mum replacedd the photo of D D Eisenhower iher her room with a one of Marshal Kliment Voroshilov and the next days her things of Western chaps by the ones of superb Svyatesalov Richter

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

My friend is commuting from Bern to Lausanne every day and doesn`t find it any problem as there are trains every 30 min. And anyway, many people commute in Switzerland especially between Zh and Basel, Zh and Bern, Zh and Luzern as it`s normally always 1 hour distance. We are lucky to have one of the best railway systems here.

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

I'd say it depends very much wher from in Lausanne, and where to in Bern- if both near the station or easy/quick access, it would be fine.
