Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

Hi,

my husband got a job in Geneva and we are considering moving to Switzerland later this year. I am looking for a job and was wondering whether it makes any sense to consider opportunities in Berne? i looked at a map and saw that Lausanne is about halfway, with decent train connections. a one hour train ride doesnt' seem too bad, but then we are living in London now so i am probably used to different commuting standards!

Does anybody commute across Swiss cities? many thanks in advance

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

I know expats who commute from Shaffhausen and Bern to work in Zurich - short-term it's a possibility, not sure if it's worth it in the long term...

If my work was laptop-based and I had a season first class train ticket, I'd happily commute and work on the train every day...or just chill out - definitely better than commuting in a car, which is the norm for Australia...

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

Also remember that the train times quoted on the SBB website are from the station to station. If you also need to add a 10 bus ride at each end plus the hanging about waiting from buses/trains your commute door to door time quickly adds up.

As nice as Swiss trains can be, when you add 3 hours to your day for commuting it makes week day activities harder to motivate yourself for.

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

As noted, make sure to calculate the commuting time from door to door. Also be aware that the commuter trains are pretty full during rush-hour, even in Switzerland.

It is certainly possible to do the commute. The question is, does it make sense for you to take the reduction in quality of life for the period you plan to commute?

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

I would consider the quality of life if you do this!

Consider the option to both live and work in Geneva. I have been there and done that in commuting long distances and in the end it takes it's toll.

Now I have gone to the other extreme, work for myself and from home. Wish I had done this years ago.

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

In my last job in Scotland, I communted 1.5 hour in the mornign, and 55 minutes in the evening. We had a carpool, so we were not depending on train times, so commuting was not that bad, and we had lots of fun on the way.

In my last job here, I commuted 2.5 hour in my last job. That is too much. you come home from work, cook dinner, eat, go to bed, and do not get your 8 hours of sleep before you have to get up again next morning. It is doable short-term, but it is really killing you in the long run. When I was back in Zürich, the shops were closed, so either i had to shop in my Lunchbreaks, or in the Weekends only.
Think carefully about it, and keep in mind, there are no 24 hour Tesco in Switzerland.

Doc.

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

I know someone who commutes between Neuchatel & Zurich but most Swiss live near to their place of work.
Another point to remember is that if you are moving to Lausanne and working in Geneva because of speaking French - you will be in the Swiss german part in Berne.

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

I did commute 4 years between Lausanne and Geneva. It was doable but not ideal. It is okay if you live and work close to the train station but it was not my case.

Good resource. You can also enter a street address on www.sbb.ch (timetable of the national railways), and it will show your itinerary from door to door including walking times (although those seem a little high usually). The SBB timetable also takes into account all local transport. Very useful.

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

It's perfectly possible to commute from Lausanne to Bern if you want to and are up for it. Thousands of people are used to commuting 1 to 1.5 hrs each way in London and if you're used to that life then the experience won't come as a shock. In fact you'll be doing it in a lot more comfort than you would in the City. The express trains between the two cities are clean, comfortable, quiet and strike free and run every 30 minutes or so. As others have said, most people here live close to work and in many ways it would be a pity to miss out on that. But at the end of the day it comes down to you and your priorities. Personally, as someone who commuted from Oxford to the docklands every day for a number of years, if I lived in Lausanne and found a fantastic job in Bern I wouldn't think twice about the commute. One thing to bear in mind though is that people tend to start work earlier in Switzerland (some as early as 7 am) so you need to be clear about the start time and factor that in.

The bigger headache would be the commute from Lausanne to Geneva. Although the trains are more frequent and it takes a shorter time than from Lausanne and Bern, at peak commuting times the trains can be very overcrowded and standing room only because of the limited number of tracks and the high number of commuters travelling to and from Lausanne and Geneva each day. They keep talking about building a third track so they could increase the number of trains to relieve the pressure but it's not going to happen any time soon.

Nev, thanks your post has given me a glimmer of hope. not really keen on moving and if i could find a job i like, anywhere within humanly commutable distance, it would make it a lot less depressing...

If you decide to commute, and if finances allow, splurge on a 1st class AG, this will make it more bearable (especially on the crowded sections like Geneve/Lausanne).

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

I commuted between Basel and Berne for about 6 years, and that was before the Intercity trains were around. It was totally do-able, and if it hadn't been for the ungodly hour in the morning that I had to get up, it would have been mostly enjoyable.

If you like to read, then it's actually brilliant as it gives you the time to do so, with relatively few interruptions!

When I did my commute (the 80's) a monthly train pass was pretty affordable - I found that sitting at the extreme front or rear of the train usually guaranteed me a seat in a quiet section since most people don't feel like walking the length of the train to find one.

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

Hey,

I have a same problem, commuting between Lausanne and Bern (Zollikofen). So I am starting an internship in Zollikofen on Tuesday and it was impossible to find a room in Bern so now I am thinking about commuting in September and extending it until the end of internship, 31st of January 2016. So I counted on around 2 hours there and back, it takes 1h25 to get from Lausanne Gare to Zollikofen station and the workplace is exactly at the station. What do you think? Is it doable? I'd buy a students general abonnement for 240CHF a month and I don't pay rent in Lausanne since I live with my family.

Your thoughts on the problem?

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

I know a guy who does it the other way round and he seems to survive. Does a lot of reading on the train. I've never done a long commute myself and anyway, every reacts to this sort of thing differently. However, as you haven't a lot of time-wasting changes and with any luck, as you live with your family, you don't have to worry too much about shopping etc. I'd say it is doable. Tiring, but doable.

My daughter had a time-comsuming commute for a few months. She became friendly with a colleague who offered her a bed, so she stayed there overnight from time to time. Only catch was she had some of her stuff at her own flat, some at he colleague's flat and some still with us. Now where is my red jacket?

Hope it works out well.

I did it for about 6 months, 2 hrs door to door one way, I echo what most ppl say, doable for a short term, unless you work flex like Friday work from home or something which might make it easier.

Re: Is it possible to live in Lausanne and commute to Berne

It depends on how Close you are to the Train Station and the Job in Bern as well. I have a colleague that commutes each day from Lausanne.

The timetable says 1 hour 6 minutes plus commute time on each end.

It takes about an hour ,door to door 1 hour 30 mins depending on hour far you stay from Lausanne train station.laussane gare has many trains to been. And gare is well connected with buses and metro. You can get timetable of buses, metro and trains online. Geneva, been, luassane are good places to stay.
