Mine is simple too: they dont treat buskers with contempt. Try it in London and you will see what I mean.

Did you see that Badly Drawn Boy video...? Can't find it on Youtube but he spent a day busking outside Paddington station and made £13.74

Not bad work if you can get it...

Re: OK now tell me what you LOVE about Switzerland

I love that it takes 5 minutes to leave a store, with all of the thank yous and goodbyes.

I love that I will never ever get Switzerland in full.

I love that service people aren't living and dieing on tips and how it shows in their service.

I love the uniqueness of the language and cultural borders.

I love how often I can see something in Switzerland that has obviously shaped the man that I love.

Baring in mind the many complaints about rudeness I read on him, this does make sense

Our main reason to stay in switzerland is for tax issues. Since wa are managing our own company switzerland is taxwise excelent!!!!!
Fairs fair mate, why don´t you pay taxes - without trying to avoid it - like the other poor bastards stuck back in whichever place you come from. It´s always the poor that pay and the rich that sod off.

Re: OK now tell me what you LOVE about Switzerland

I love the dogs -- furry, contented, friendly and mostly well-behaved.

I love the Hundeschlitten (dogsled rides) in winter with beautiful Siberian huskies on powdery snow.

My fellow-foreigners' Swiss husbands are real nice guys, helpful, generous and thoughtful.

I love the Cham lake park where you can just sit for an hour or two observing and the wild life (mute swans, mallards, interesting hybrid ducks both big and small, Carolina wood ducks, Greylag geese; the expertly diving, bonneted Great Crested Grebes (Haubentauher, or something like that in German), and even the cunning and quick Eurasian Coots.

I love the libraries in Zug (free of charge) and Cham (only CHF5 joining fee).

The double rainbows in the past week in Cham have been truly awe-inspiring.

I know I've become quite 'Swiss' -- or at least feel 'at home' -- when I stop to chat with the supermarket cashier and hold up the line for a few seconds more, and when strangers on the street ask me for directions despite seeing my very obvious 'foreign' features.

Re: OK now tell me what you LOVE about Switzerland

And from a working mother point of view...What I love most (well at least compared to my home country):

- The possibility of working 80,60,50 or even less percent after having a child
- The possibility of working from home or get sick leave yourself in case your child is sick
- The possibility of saying no to assignments abroad or travelling since you are a mother
- The flexible working hours as long as you work 40 hours a week
- Leaving sharp at 5:30pm everyday so that I can rush to pick up my daughter from the krippe
- And despite all these, what is accounted at the end of the year for your performance evaluation is whether you can deliver high quality work on time or not

Well, the only bad thing I can say out of these is the expensive krippe bill of Chf1500 per month that I have to pay.

Everything so far. However, I'm dying to find those cows with the long beautiful eyelashes and loud bells. Would someone please tell me where to find them???

I've never got up close enough to see their eyelashes, but the cows are everywhere. I have never seen as much beef on the hoof

Re: OK now tell me what you LOVE about Switzerland

Things that I love:
(I just moved here from North Carolina, a place that some people consider to be the Southern Part of Heaven. As if )

But I like Switzerland much better.....I love

To be outside. I feel as though I can breathe again.

Just goregous, varied views - lakes, rivers, mountains, valleys, fog, etc etc etc.

From our flat, we have a view of the alps, the city of Bern and the Guerbetal. Fast changing weather. Fabulous thunderstorms, if a little loud.

Our flat is really high-tech with sun and wind sensored awnings, in-floor heating, a louvered glass ceiling with a rain sensor and a fab kitchen. And yet, I can look out the kitchen window and see cows.

I love the cow bells. Sort of a cross between a wind chime and improvisational music. And yes, the cows do have beautiful eye lashes and they are lovely and generally placid animals.

I live in a small town of less than 10,000 people, yet can get into the city in about 15 minutes by train. People have been very nice. And we can buy bread even on Sundays.

Bern is a lovely city, easy to navigate, good for walking.

My husband is happier in his job than I've seen him in several years. He has great resources to do his job. And I have the time to finish my PhD, and relax.

Lots of places to walk the dog.

Delivery of groceries.

Chocolate.

People say hello on the street. If you try that in the US in some places, people think you've escaped from the asylum.

Re: OK now tell me what you LOVE about Switzerland

I think I was previously reading the "what makes you smile" thread which could be interpreted a bit differently.

I recently had a friend visiting. What made her smile was:

Double-decker trains
The pretty bank notes
The concept of "rubbish tourism"
Buffet restaurants where you weigh your food
Self-service bars
People lying in the sun on the top of Pilatus
The word "fuenf"

As well as the scenery, public transport, boat trips, etc.

I know many of these aren't purely Swiss, but just thought I would add a few more into the mix...

kfc.

things i like about switzerland

every so often i get asked by swiss people "oh, do you like switzerland".. my answer is always "well, i'm still here.." most of us literate english speakers have a choice about which country we live in, and, when push comes to shove, do actually like it here - be it because of the gorgious babe that used to sit accross from us, but is now the next swiss supermodel (see thread) or the sunday shopping ban (keeps you away from the shop, and doing something interesting/productive with your life).
Things i like are that i am not dependant on a car; i can walk to the shops, movies, pool, gym, or take a bus or bike: (cant do that in wellington). i also like that my health insurance pays for MY health: in nz you pay *tax* which goes into the big tax bucket for all and funds the "public health system"...
you?

Re: things i like about switzerland

Hi my friends, depends where you are living....but it's true that if you're living in/or next to a big town, you will have everything you need.
Concerning health...I was living in France....it's much better and less expensive.

But my conclusion is I also love Switzerland but for too many things.....
