Re: What do you think of Swiss Germans?

I seriously find Swiss-Germans to be people. Many are funny, amusing and willing to chat for hours over beer &/or wine; some are a bit restrained and self-contained; others can be too loud and annoying.

Funnily enough, I find them less interesting the less I know them (as individuals). The individuals I know tend to be great fun!

Comparison of Swiss-German area to Swiss-French area? They speak more English in my part of the Swiss-German area, and tend to party more loudly ... is that enough?

Re: What do you think of Swiss Germans?

I always have to smile, when I hear someone talk about Swiss people in Zürich.
Every 3rd is NOT Swiss in town.
Are you capable of telling a Swiss Person? I am not when walking through Zürich and I am Swiss.
Then again, I like the mix

Yes: In Zurich in particular, that phlegmy hacking noise gives it away every time!

Re: What do you think of Swiss Germans?

Just out of curiosity.

Is Swiss German a nationality? I thought that the native people of Switzerland are Swiss. Isn't Swiss German just the language that some Swiss speak?

If I am right, should the title of the thread be "What Do You Think of the Swiss?" or "What Do You Think of Swiss German Speakers?"

It's difficult to give a short and simple answer to this one, but it's a curious fact that in pretty much any book about Switzerland written in English before the second world war, wherever ethnicity is mentioned, the German speaking people of Switzerland are referred to simply as 'Germans'.

In light of this, therefore, one might not entirely unreasonably refer to the German speaking population of Switzerland as 'Swiss Germans', as a polite nod to current nationalist thinking.

Of course, whether 21st century German speaking Swiss people are happy with being labelled as 'another kind of German' is a whole story of its own... but you're English, so you can say what you want!

living in the French part vs the Swiss part.
I suggest you do not say such a thing in the French part of Switzerland, as they regard themselves also as Swiss, and might kick you into the next train back to Zurich

as 'Swiss Germans'

Swiss Germans already is a bit strange but Swiss French sounds a bit odd. I suggest the other way round with German Swiss / French Swiss / Italian Swiss. Alternative you may in case of the French speakers talk about the "Romands" and in case of the Italian-Swiss as the Ticinesi.

Did Mr DB mention "sparklingly witty " people from the Bernese Oberland, or was I hallucinating

Now, as much as I like them, I wouldn't go that far.........

Re: What do you think of Swiss Germans?

Maybe it would be more beneficial to start a thread like, "Why do expats always think Switzerland is going to be more like their home country and less like... Well, less like Switzerland?"

Thanks. My question is more to do with trying to compare living in Zurich with life in the French part of Switzerland (Geneva, Lausanne, international ski resports areas). I heard that many people are moving to Switzerland now but all of them are going to the French part because lifestyle is better and it is easier to "integrate".

Re: What do you think of Swiss Germans?

not bad a country that small, having so to speak 4 Nationalities. We have the French the Italien the Gemanns the Rumantsch. All are Swiss, all are proud to be Swiss and all are different from each other.
Compare it if you lie with the UK the Welsh, the Irish, Scottland and Egland. Who is less British?
You find good and bad every where to be sure.
But having been abroad many years, I find the swiss not do bad nowadays as I did back in the 1980 when I so to speak came home.

Re: What do you think of Swiss Germans?

There is a nasty little joke the Swiss tell each other
It goes like this:

A brave man from the Balkan walks in the roads of Zürich and stops a person. The BRAVE said ..thank you Mr Swiss for taking me in and letting me live here in your beautiful country.
The Stopped one, said>> Ik nid versteh.. (dont understand) and walks on.
Then the Brave stopped the next person and the same procedure
After the 5th time the poor BRAVE asked the Stopped one, but where are the Swiss????
The Stopped one looks at his watch and said “ 3pm! Well they are all at work!!!!

True, but note that England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales are actually separate countries.

From the posts here, it looks to me like we are an exception in terms of not feeling integrated here in the Zurich area and that most of the English speaking expats really like it here and have no issues with the Swiss German culture... We find it cold and not very inviting. For example when one goes to a restaurants (not talking about very international top restaurants in the centre of Zurich), the staff does not really make you feel welcome. I often see people look sad around me when I look around on a tram or train. Maybe we are too sensitive.... I did not feel like this in London for example

By the way I do speak German

The fact that you don't feel integrated here, and therefore feel unhappy, is not the problem. The problem is that you blame the Swiss for your unhappiness, rather than taking responsibility for your own situation.

To be sure, most of us on this board have had a rough time at one time or other. We get annoyed with poor customer service in shops, or with people blocking escalators, or with people pursing their lips at us and tutting loudly at our loathsome exotic nature. But then we come to the forum and joke about it, have a healthy moan about it, get it out of our systems. Then (in most cases) we get on with it, accepting that, at the end of the day, this is Switzerland, not Cheltenham or Boston or Perth, and if we don't like it here, it's our problem and no fault of the people who were born here.

I don't feel integrated into Swiss society myself, but my German is dreadful, I spend half my time in Irish pubs, and I prefer to eat Stilton rather than Appenzeller cheese. If I want to integrate further, then it's up to me as the newcomer to get off my arse and change things.

Just to clarify, again: The problem is not that you are unhappy. The problem isn't really that you've come to moan about the Swiss. The problem is the fact that you seem to blame all of your unhappiness on the locals, when it seems that the problem is entirely your own.
