Re: What do you think of Swiss Germans?

Hi all

Thought I'd post my first reply to this ridiculous question... "What do you think of Swiss Germans"? Sorry, but I was generalising like this when I was a kid, but I'm 47 now and have learned in the meantime that you find great people as well as stupid pricks wherever you go. Is there a thing such as THE American, THE Brit or THE whatever? It all depends on your own attitude, though...

Cheers
Grumpy

German-speaking Swiss not Swiss Germans?

Hi guys

Ii red Schwyzerdütsch = ich rede Schweizerdeutsch
&
Ii bi ne Dütschschwyzer = ich bin ein Deutschschweizer

So the term Swiss German is wrong, German-speaking Swiss would be better.

Boring, well according to a recent InterNations survey we are 'unfriendly', we expect you, the onescoming to us to do the approaching and trying and with almost 24% of our population without Swiss passports I think we just don't have the time and energy to be friendly to everybody and also keep the world's most successful economy working :-).

Jamadeus, en Dütschschwyzer

Nah, it's not. You're ethnic Germans, like most Austrians. Your nationality is Swiss. You are, therefore, Swiss Germans.

Why revive a thread which has been dead for six years? The opinions expressed here date from a previous decade.

In any case, you're wrong. The term "German-speaking Swiss" is misleading, because it implies that the distinguishing characteristic is the language, whereas the differences go well beyond the language.

I prefer the term Allemaniac.

Jamadeus:

1. Thanks for correcting the Swiss German terminology.
2. Thanks for letting us know foreigners should approach you and not vice versa.
3. And best of all, thanks for giving evidence for Swiss German stereotypes.

Welcome to the forum.

Well, allemanic would be the adjective, so allemaniac would be the person, no? And I suppose allemania is the name of the condition.

I'm Swiss-German, but am not ethnically German whatsoever.

My kids, on the other hand, are also Swiss-German, and have a great-great-grandfather from Baden-Baden, so they ARE ethnically German (but not much).

My wife is also Swiss-German, but at best 12.5% ethnically German, so the most German of the bunch, but she only speaks Italian.

Re: What do you think of Swiss Germans?

I find them ok, apart from the fact they don't speak or try to speak any French. As i do, towards them over there. Yuk.

Put me in the middle of Zurich, i would not know where i am nor be able to speak the lingo. and i would think ditto.

So then we shall shout in English.

It rather interesting, that you lot are so full of yourselves that you speak German, but have you actually thought about the people that are trying to learn Italian or French.

This is the English Forum - i don't need to read how to do this and that in German and do i have to learn the French or italian name for the ghealdhrao4erkahf. Make it a bit more International, for the ones that don't live the high life in Swiss Germany please.

I'm not Swiss-German, but my great-great-great-grandmother was Russian; so I'm ethnically 2,5% Russian.
My OH is not French, but his great-grandfather was, so he actually is. He speaks French because he has studied it in school.
